Gyms in Focus: Elista, Russia
Where is it? Elista is the capital of Russia’s Republic of Kalmykia, the homeland of the ethnic Kalmyks and the only majority-Buddhist region in Europe. Its psychic-type gym is found just east of the city in a complex known as “Chess City”, home to many of the city’s chess tournaments.
What’s so special about it? As one of the world’s unofficial “chess capitals”, Elista has historically been home to many excellent chess players and tournaments, including the 1998 Chess Olympiad. For this reason, the city’s gym challenge takes the form of a giant chess board, and challengers must beat their opponent in a game of chess to advance to the leader, all while fending off gym trainers.
What Pokemon should I expect to see? Expect lots of Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam. The gym leader uses a Mega Alakazam as his ace, and the gym’s Kadabra have proven to be smart enough to take on the average human in a chess match. More locally, this gym also uses Solrock and Lunatone, caught on the nearby steppes.
What tips do you have? First, to challenge this gym, you need to know how to play chess, and more importantly, how to win at chess. The actual match won’t be too difficult, especially if you’re a beginner trainer, but while fighting off opposing Pokemon it’s easy to forget about strategy and make mistakes. Keep your focus and you’ll emerge triumphant.
