The words stopped Lindsey dead in her tracks. She wasn’t quite sure that she’d heard him correctly. “What,” she asked, hoping that he’d repeat them, though there was no reason for it. She could see in the way he was looking at her that she hadn’t imagined or misheard him. Halcyon, her strong somewhat stoic but always annoyed bodyguard, had said something kind to her. It made Lindsey feel off kilter. “Umm…” Lindsey worried at her lower lip, hands twisting at the hem of the shirt she wore even though she knew that it would wrinkle the silk. Mentally, she berated herself. Still, she couldn’t get her hands to stop. 

“Did you get that from a fortune cookie?” She forced her hands to stop and her voice to take on its usual light and teasing tone, not quite meeting his gaze; meeting his eyes at that moment would indicate that his words had meant something to her… it was words like those that made her want to bury herself under his skin, bask in his warmth for as long as he’d let her. Lindsey was so used to people looking but never seeing her, that the idea of being recognized -- truly seen -- made her emotional. Quietly, almost too quiet to be heard, a single word fell from her lips which negated the teasing tone she’d initially taken. “Thanks.”

Proposing to Lis had become something of a pasttime. Some people chose sports. Others art. Still others books. Elijah chose to occupy his time playing house with the girl he’d loved for as long as he could remember and his son. “That’s romantic,” he replied, elbow deep in soapy water as he washed the dishes they’d used for their meal earlier. “Like some Justin Bieber song. What’s the one?” Eli hummed a tune he’d heard play at work a few days ago. “Something about being poor and in love.” He flashed a smile in Lis’s direction, rinsing his hands before turning off the faucet. “Looks like we’ve got that down, at least.” He was joking, mostly.

Most people avoided cemeteries. For good reason. Lisette was not most people. And neither was Eli, by extension, since he seemed to be her shadow.

“Remind me again why you chose the foggiest day to follow up on a lead,” Elijah grumbled under his breath as they picked their way gingerly through the rows of headstones. He knew that nothing would come of him voicing his grievances. 

Dried leaves crunched beneath his boots and Eli tugged at the strings of his hoodie. There was a slight crisp in the air and had it not been for the small, cracked stones he was making a conscious effort not to step on, he would have called this the perfect Autumn day.

“Bartholomew. Elmer. Frederick.” Elijah called out the names as he stepped over the stones. Most of them were illegible, having been worn away over time by the elements, but the ones he could read caused him to snort. Names in the 1800s were definitely something.

Elijah wasn’t the most popular of names, he knew. It was biblical and old timey. A complete antithesis to who he was as a person – covered in tattoos and piercings, stomping around a graveyard in heavy black boots, old worn jeans, and a hoodie that had so many holes it did nothing to keep him warm. He was hardly the first image that the name Elijah conjured.

“Imagine if we’d decided to call Noah something stupid like Herbert.” He could barely choke out the words over the laugh that bubbled in his chest.

“ That .. is a terrible name for a person.” The sarcasm dripping in her tone only caused Eli to laugh more. “He would’ve hated it and you.”
