Like Waiting for Godot
It’s been five days since Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino publicly said he’d follow CNBC’s Eli Langer on Twitter. “You’re gonna follow me too,” said Marino to an amenable Langer in the course of a lightning round style Q&A billed, “Rapid Release with Dan Marino,” which oddly enough, appeared to take place during an actual lightning storm. (see video)
In a punchy, 81 second clip, Langer fires off 16 questions to Marino, including, “Will you follow me on Twitter after this interview?” Unblinkingly, Marino smiles and says, “Sure,” except he didn’t, or hasn’t yet.
To be fair, Marino doesn’t know what he’s missing. Witty without being snarky, Langer’s Twitter feed merges politics, technology, pop culture and humor; sometimes all in one Tweet. Follow Langer, and your time-line will be rewarded with snackable little nuggets of information like this Tweet speculating the motives behind Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s self imposed cone of silence.
A social media expert, Langer boasts over 14,000 Followers. Not ever having led an NFL team through an undefeated season though, Langer, unsurprisingly has 119,000 fewer followers than Marino. For “Dan the Man,” following Langer would constitute a follow down. Although, after his interview with Langer, Marino did stop by Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Great Neck NY, who, as it happens, he follows on Twitter.
Like Langer said in a Tweet while I was writing this, “Twitter isn’t only for Tweeting, it’s for viewing too.” So, when you’re viewing the profile status of a legendary Hall of Fame quarterback, what people really want to know is, who does Dan Marino follow?
Including Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, Nutrisystem, and comedian Jim Carrey, Marino follows 37 accounts. The first person he followed on Twitter? John Elway. Snubbed again, apparently Elway’s on #Teamnofollowback too. Sorry Dan.
Super Bowl week was frenzied. Marino is a coveted, much sought after sports celebrity and commentator; we get it, he’s busy. Maybe following Eli just slipped his mind?
Obviously, I’m a big fan of following down. Elway should follow Marino, Marino should reciprocate Langer, Langer should follow me, and I’ll follow @JoeNamathsLeggs
#FollowEli
