El sighed as she heard a knock at her front door, slightly annoyed. 

As she walked through the living room she wondered how the hell this could be. I mean Joyce just left, Will is in his dorm halfway across campus and- 

The door opens to see a red-head on the other side of the door. 

“Hi” El said, sounding confused. She furrowed her eyebrows at the girl. 

“Hi” The girl smiled back. “I’m Max” She stuck out her hand.

"El" She looked down at her hand and after a moment shook it. “Not to be rude but, what are you doing here?” El asked, tilting her head and letting go of her hand. 

“Oh,” Max pulled her hand back. “Uhm, I’m your roommate” She said slowly, sounding embarrassed. 

“Oh I thought-” El got cut off byu the girl in the doorway. “I know this is so last minute and I’m sorry they kinda forgot to assign me a room so I’m stuck here” Max shrugged with a frown. 

“Well, there is an extra room so come on in” El smiled and moved out of the way. Max smiled and nodded. 

“So, I guess this is your room” El led the red head into the free room in their dorm. “Thanks” Max sat on her bed. 

“Where’s all your stuff?” El asked, sitting next to her. “Oh, my mom has all that” Max smiled. 

“Something was telling me to drive alone and get here early” She let herself fall back onto the bed. “Thank god for that right?’ El joked, laying next to her. 

“Yeah, I guess so” She chuckled. “So where are you from?” She asked, staring up at the ceiling. “A small town called Lenora in California” El answered, staring at the ceiling with Max. “You?” 

“A small town in Indiana called Hawkins” She giggled. “So, why did you decide to go here?” El asked, propping herself  up on her elbow. “This is my dream college” Max broke her gaze to look at El. 

“Me too” El giggled, looking between Max’s pretty blue eyes. She suddenly noticed how close they were. 

“Uhm” Max spoke in a hushed tone. 

A vibration coming from Max’s phone made both of them jump. “Sorry” Max slurred out of embarrassment and sat back up, taking her phone out of her hoodie pocket.

“My mom’s here, can you help me with my stuff?” She asked with a smile that El suddenly adored. “Of course” She smiled back and got up, sticking her hand out for Max to take.

day - ( day 1 - Rommates Au )

summary - ( El Byers just moved into her new dorm and she opens the door to find Max Mayfield at her door. The school forgot to assign Max a room so now she has to life with a stranger. Randomly assigned roommates, am I right? )

Max means well but she clearly fed into Els already existing idea that she wasn’t in danger and that she was in a state where she was capable of deciding the limits to her powers(there was too much pressure on her and she has a savior complex, the situation was too intense for her to have to make decisions about her safety on her own) when it was just extremely dangerous. Its not that Max wants El harm or doesn’t care about her, its because she hasn’t experienced certain things with El, and she simply doesn’t know better and probably assumed Els struggles were similar to hers when she came to her for help. The party went to the movie theaters, a place El can’t go and then mocked Mike for being late because he didn’t want El to be lonely all day. Like i know they were joking but the jokes turned out to be a lot more genuine for Will, who was also going trough things of his own of course. There was a lack of understanding for Els situation from the party at the beginning of s3, but they all got to see the reasons why El had to live the way she did in the second half of s3.. They’re great amazing friends and important people in Els life to be grateful for, but they’re still just her friend group. amazing friends and definitely special, but not enough that if she only had them she wouldn’t lack love and care in her life. 

And as much as i love Hopper and El.. he took her in kind of out of shame about spilling his guts about her and the boys’ location to Brenner.. It doesn’t make their relationship disingenuous, it just means that he didn’t care about her as much as Will because he already knew him and saving Will was his mission.. of course until he felt responsible for what happened to her. He didn’t care enough about her when she was just a stranger. 

Only Mike cared for her when she was a stranger. Only he cared for her when she couldn’t offer anything back. He cared for her when she was a cold stranger in need of help and nothing else. Only he took her seriously and cared about her before he knew she had the power to possibly save Will. He was the first person to genuinely want nothing from her other than making sure she was safe. To someone who’s gone through what El has gone through, someone like Mike isn’t just replaceable. She’s not dependent on him but she WANTS him. She could live without him, but there would be an emptiness inside of her because of the role he’s played in her life and because she loves him? Mike serves more of a role in her life than just a first crush and a teenage romance. He’s the person that knows and understands her better than anyone else in her life. I’m not saying that if you don’t ship mileven you want El to be unloved. I’m saying that if you try to prove that Mike doesn’t care about El especially with terrible takes that don’t make sense with context, and that you try to prove that Mike doesn’t care about her EVEN PLATONICALLY then yes, you do come across to me like you want El to suffer<3
