The elephant in the room
Natural history museum Bern
The skeleton of the elephant of Murten is on display at the natural history museum in Bern.
In june 1866 the indian elephant bull killed his keeper and escaped the circus in a rampage. We now know he was in musth. To prevent further disaster and protect the town and its people, an artillery canon was used to bring the animal down.

The meat was sold to the people of Murten, and the skeleton ended up in Bern. There used to be a mount as well, but it sadly got disposed of in the 1930s. The cannon ball that was used is on display in the museum in Murten
