I started "Elementary" to balance out the emotional wreck that is POI (and also because Natalie Dormer is in it and no one told me??? I disown all my mutuals for this grave oversight.) and I wasn't prepared to like it so much. Like, sure, I watched a handful on episodes on TV, but never in order. Totally fucking random (unless you know I picked up some new books about the topic) but while I understand what people mean about Female!Sherlock being a need, I also feel like people donāt seem to get that having Lucy Liu as a female!Watson is STILL amazing in its own right. Iād even argue that thereās more prestige in having a femaleĀ āex-doctorā professional who also is an Asian woman and has her skill in-universe to be almost equal to Holmes himself and recognized as such to boot. Would I welcome a female Holmes too? yes. But it bothers me how people overlook just how much of an achievement it is for there to be an Asian female!Watson. Iām not saying to be content with it. Iām saying recognize it as the achievement it was and still is.Ā
Constantly constantly people are far too often focusing on Holmes and the adaptations thereof and letting Watson fall to the wayside. I get it. Itās the difference of being the main star versus being the supportingĀ āsidekickā. But ignoring Lucy Liuās Watson does absolutely nobody any favors. Especially when people in the industry (as well as the audience) would prefer Lucy Liu be nowhere near the mythos of Sherlock Holmes. I rarely see anyone say anything about this. Itās alwaysĀ āyeah but Sherlock is still a dudeā. You CAN recognize both things at the same time, yāknow? Sherlock is still a dude BUT Watson is an asian woman. Halfway there is better than still at the starting line.Ā

My unpopular opinion about this character: idk how unpopular it is, but I really think the latter seasons often let her down.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: like I said, more storylines about her. Also, frankly, I think she should've been validated when she was angry at her step-father for the book thing.
Favorite friendship for this character: other than Sherlock, I really like her relationship with Kitty.

I've been rewatching old Elementary episodes and I finally made it to the finale. I enjoyed it/the last season more the second time around, at least. I still think the show didn't really do right by Joan or enough with her after the first season, tbh, but otherwise it was an apt way to close it. and I did go all soft in the finale about the Joan-Sherlock bond (platonic life partner goals).
still hate her blonde hair though. that's irredeemable xD
Iām still profoundly miffed at the fact that, out of all the men in Elementary, Iām supposed to believe Joan was most attracted to MYCROFT.

I have watched the show, but Iām going to be honest: Iām so separated from its fandom that I for once havenāt got any clue as to what would be āunpopularā.
On the whole... I guess Iām less impressed with it as a āfaithful adaptationā than others seem to be. Though itās less about characterization (itās been too long since I read an ACD novel and Iāve never been that invested, so I hesitate to make claims on that part), than about the fact that it butchered one of my favourite Sherlock stories (The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton). Which, to add insult to injury, is one apparently NO ONE knows how to adapt properly *grumbles*
Err... I think most of the episodic plots are incredibly weak, tbh. In that sense, itās a very subpar procedural IMO.
I think after s1 the Adler-Moriarty reveal lost its charm and that storyline became a lot less engaging, sadly (and thereās the fact that although I loved the reveal itself, I also love the original Irene and was a little sad that she was never A Thing in this version xD). And I found the writing for Watson more and more disappointing over time, with only enough trinkets as to keep me ~tethered to the show lol.
I donāt know whatās the takeaway from the last season for the fandom, but I struggle to remember much of it other than how much I disliked Watsonās hair, so make of that as you will xDĀ
