For the longest time, I don't really have anything to say about him. That's because the screentime we have for him is very limited (not counting fusions, Movie 1, GL1 Ep23-24, Movie 2, Sori Ep5-6, Windara Ep6). Most of his character capabilities are locked behind fusions, which made it harder to dissect him properly. So I put him down, teasing him when in reality I only have a draft of him dating back in 2025.
That is until I discovered this masterpiece called âHow Strong is Victim? - Character Fight Breakdown! (Animator vs Animation Alan Becker)â, courtesy of âMouchie Likes Storiesâ on Youtube. That is when I finally have the motivation to put an end of this series.
So... Let me yap, will ya?
Victim that I mention here is from Alan Becker's series called "Animator versus Animation. (Going on a bit of a tangent here.) I won't spoil it for you, but what I'm trying to achieve here is that both of these characters have a sort of similar attacking style, â(Victim)'s attacks are grand and bold, but the actual technique that comes with these attacks are lost on him.â âVictim's use is too messy and reactive. If one thing doesn't work, surely another thing will.â
Yes, we've seen Solar's attacks. Bold, powerful, excessive, but there is little technique being applied to it. Boboiboy is best seen as a melee attacker, rarely he had to apply ranged attacks. Thunderstorm has a lot of weapons, but all of them are melee. Cyclone has been seen multiple times approaching the enemy up close. Quake and Ice only go on ranged when they're on the defensive. And Blaze has two separate kits, one melee and one ranged.
I think the only time that the light power is being used for melee (not in fusions) are in the Windara finale when they got swords, and in Movie 1, Boboiboy himself used a sort of âlight punchâ towards Bora Ra. Every other time he only used the light powers as a finisher. Movie 2 (their first encounter with Retak'ka), Sori Ep5 (the first encounter with the dinosaurs) and Windara Ep6 are prominent examples of that.
There was a time when he acted outside his usual kit. In Galaxy Ep 24, he actually had more of a support role in the first half. He was providing support to try to help Fang attack Captain Vargoba, by either shooting away the boxes and blinding the enemy. But when they cornered him the first time, he decided to take it slow, despite the enemy still capable of attacking them. After that Boboiboy was reckless with his attacks, launching multiple small light beam projectiles that got reflected and focusing his power to launch a full-on assault on Captain Vargoba, only to fail the first time. He did succeed when he used Solar, but he not only exhausted himself, but destroyed the TAPOPS Station along with it.
We see this trend continuing as every appearance of Solar after this episode (except Sori) Boboiboy would exert his powers until he is left defenseless. It's a very uneffective as if you're going all in that attack.
"Oh, is he being used as a 'get out of jail' card?"
I asked myself that question, after watching Windara Ep2. Everytime, at his every appearance, I would repeat that question, only to receive the same answer everytime. So... you could see why I haven't done him sooner.
In conclusion, is Solar powerful? Yes. Does Boboiboy know how to use it? No. Like how Victim failed because of his inefficient usage of his powers, Boboiboy failed to fully utilise Solar, at least compared to Thunderstorm and Blaze. But with how Retak'ka had to seek out the other elemental powers and Boboiboy having to use fusions with Solar for his full potential, surely Monsta will make a storyline focused on base form Solar?
