*takes a deep breath*
Okay so.
I suspect we're going to be here for a while
So to understand electronic configuration, we need to know about subshells
Basically there are these things called "orbitals"
Orbitals are the path of the e-
So there are 4 types/shapes of orbitals
Now these subshells can accommodate a certain number of electrons
S subshell can accommodate 2e-
P subshell can accommodate 6e-
D subshell can accommodate 10e-
F subshell can accommodate 14e-
Now onto the
Fun
Part-
Electronic configuration:
It is defined as the arrangement of e- according to shells and subshells.
So when we arrange the subshells, we get a chart thingy
(I think there's supposed to be an 8s after the 7p but I'm not sure)
Now, as we can see, the electrons start filling up in a downward angle, from the top right to the left bottom.
Now folks 👏. Buckle up cause this is how we find the electronic configuration.
Now let's take Hydrogen as an example
Hydrogen's atomic no. is 1. So it's configuration is 1s1
So, we know that the s subshell can carry 2 electrons.
So we have more space left in the subshell
If we look at helium (atomic no. 2), it's configuration is 1s2
Now, the 1st s subshell is filled. So we move on to the 2nd s subshell (2s)
Now litium (atomic no. 3), it's configuration is 1s2 2s1
Berillium (atomic no. 4), it's configuration is 1s2 2s2
Then we move on to the p subshell.
Now, we start noticing an obvious pattern like
Boron (atomic number 5) 1s2 2s2 2p1
Carbon - 1s2 2s2 2p2
And it goes on like that with the rest of the elements
We can check if we have the right configuration by adding up all the second numbers
Like if we want to check the configuration of carbon, we add the 2+2+2
(this is a picture of the earlier part cause I couldn't find the perfect™ picture sorry)
The circled part is the numbers we're adding)
The atomic number of carbon is 6.
If we add up the 2+2+2, we get 6
Voila!!
And I also feel the need to mention you don't have to write EVERY single subshell, just the last bit
Like
Configuration of carbon - 2p2.
We don't have to write the entire 1s2 2s2 2p2.
So um yeah.
