This week in Alaska History: On September 18, 1948 Eielson Air Force Base was formally dedicated. Eielson is about 26 miles south east of Fairbanks. It was named in honor of Colonel Carl Eielson who was the first person to fly a plane over the Arctic Circle and fly the 2,500 mile North Pole route from Alaska to Spitsbergen, Norway. On July 20, 1957 a memorial at Heritage Park, located on the base, was dedicated to Carl Eielson. READ MORE...Â

Exercise RED FLAG-Alaska 20-3 concludes. #PACAF
The Pacific Air Forces (PACAF)-sponsored exercise RED FLAG-Alaska 20-3 concluded on August 14, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) said in a statment.
Flying participants completed roughly 560 sorties and racked up approximately 1,500 flying hours which contributed to the pilots gaining the confidence needed to execute combat operations.
