How interesting that THIS is the difference that Kohane sees - that she thinks that they’re different at all in that area. She thinks that Watanuki contrasts to her because he’s surrounded by people now - not realising that she’s surrounded by the exact same people, who are also invested in helping her. I expect she sees herself as even more isolated with her mother being such a hole in her life for so long, and it might take a while to realise just how much these other people can be relied on even without giving anything in exchange. 

Doumeki even reaches out to pat her in response - though I’m not sure if his statement is that “we” are here for Kohane as well, saying what I was saying above - or that “we” are both also here for Watanuki, effectively putting himself and Kohane together in the same group, as the “we”, and saying that they’re supporting Watanuki just like everyone else. 

I think the next page only makes sense if it’s the latter.

In which Kohane gently removes Doumeki’s hand and says that she can’t exorcise anymore. 

So I think her explanation was more about being useful - she wants to support Watanuki the same way everyone else does, but (like in her conversation with the old psychic) she can’t really fathom being useful to anyone without her powers. She still has quite a bit of healing to go before she might be comfortable realising that she has worth all on her own, so right now Doumeki’s insistent that THEY (as a group) are useful doesn’t reach her the same way, since she can no longer do what he does. 

It’s a bit of a shame that that thread is left dangling while she changes course, but still, there’s lots of time for her.

They’re bringing this RIGHT to the forefront of the narrative now, the central scene at the end of this chapter. 

DOES THIS MEAN IT’S COMING? ARE THEY HIGHLIGHTING THE EGG AS A CLEAR SIGNPOST THAT THEY WANT YOU TO REMEMBER IT IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

IS IT ALMOST EGG TIME?!
