LJS 237 - Quinque libri Egesippi nacione Judei de excidio iudeorum

This is a digital facsimile of an illuminated manuscript of a Latin translation and adaptation of De bello Judaico with information added from other historians, mostly Latin, traditionally attributed to Egesippus. Contemporary scholarly marginalia and glosses attempt to resolve inconsistencies between this text and the more literal Latin translation of Rufinus. Look at the exquisite illuminations of the front page!  It was possibly written in Padua, Italy, around 1460, but the decorations of the first page are 17th century.

LJS 237 Quinque libri Egesippi nacione Judei de excidio iudeorum is a Latin text written in Italy, possibly Padua, ca. 1460. 

It is a Latin translation and adaptation of De bello Judaico, or The War of the Jews, with information added from other historians. It is traditionally attributed to Egesippus. Contemporary scholarly marginalia and glosses attempt to resolve inconsistencies between this text and the more literal Latin translation of Rufinus. 

The border decoration on this page is rich in color and the illuminated initial Q is elaborately decorated with a knotted design inside. Look at the crest in the center of the page at the bottom with a crowned serpent consuming a human-like figure. 

LJS 237 is a Latin translation and adaptation of De bello Judaico with information added from other historians, mostly Latin, traditionally attributed to Egesippus. It was adapted in Italy in ca. 1460. De bello Judaico is an account of the Jewish War and traditionally contains, in addition to an account of the fall of Jerusalem, information on Egesippus own part in the conflict. The opening of this manuscript, folio 2r, has a lovely illusionistic border.
