Venice Recaptures Padua During the War of the League of Cambrai
On July 17, 1509, the Republic of Venice recaptured the important Italian city of Padua after it had fallen earlier that year during the opening stages of the War of the League of Cambrai. The city, located close to Venice, was a valuable possession because of its strategic position and economic importance.
Padua had been seized in June 1509 by forces loyal to Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire, following Venice’s defeat at the Battle of Agnadello against the League of Cambrai. However, the imperial occupation was short-lived, as the Venetians quickly organized a counteroffensive and regained control of the city.
The recovery of Padua marked a turning point for Venice during a difficult period when it faced a powerful alliance of European states. The victory strengthened Venetian morale and helped the republic begin restoring its influence in northern Italy.
