Steve Bobinski's psychedelic interpretation of Syd Barrett's "Effervescing Elephant", a song from his second solo LP, "Barrett". A lively vivacious long-trunked pachyderm parades through a jungle teeming with beasts terrified of a treacherous tiger.
Soon after, Syd wrote his own âEffervescing Elephantâ, shining with characteristic wit. Â Like Bellocâs Cautionary Tales, a tiny fable on pride, with fatal consequences for a hapless elephant. Â The jungle scenario and animals â tiger, elephant, and water bison â were redolent of Andrew Langâs The Red Book of Animal Stories. At seventeen, Barrett showed ample wit, with deft timing and juggling ability. Â âI did tend to take lines from other things, lines I like, and then wrote around them,â said Barrett. âIt was writing good songs that mattered, really.â
To Barrett, a song was to be shared, written to amuse friends. Visiting new friends, Syd brought his guitar and sang âEffervescing Elephantâ. Â Storm Thorgerson thought the song was nice, though he was not bowled over. Storm remembered âthinking it was really nice but not thinking heâs going to go anywhere.â

While recording Barrett, David Gilmour realized that the best â and perhaps only â method to capture Sydâs mercurial presence on tape would be to reverse the traditional studio method of recording the backing track â drums, bass, some guitar â first. Â Such an approach was largely impossible for a producer working with Syd Barrett in 1970. Instead, Gilmour rolled tape while Syd played and sang.
Jerry Shirley says that approach yielded some quality material. Â Citing âEffervescing Elephantâ as an example, he says, âThat was one of the several songs that Syd wrote as a schoolboy. Â They all used to sit around and idolize him before he was famous, because he had this knack of writing songs that nobody else had. Â âEffervescing Elephantâ was one of those that Dave reminded him of and, sure enough, he went right to it, reverted to type, and just played it.â

An effervescing elephant / With tiny eyes, and great big trunk / Once whispered to the tiny ears / The ears of one inferior / That by next June heâd die, oh yeah!
Initial sales and reaction of Barrettâs first solo album, The Madcap Laughs, were deemed ânot badâ by EMI to sanction a second solo album. So, on February 24, 1970, a month after releasing Madcap, Barrett appeared on John Peelâs Top Gear radio show, where he performed only one song from the newly released album (Terrapin), three that would later be recorded for Barrett (Gigolo Aunt, Baby Lemonade and Effervescing Elephant).
Effervescing Elephant was pastiche of the verse form of Hilaire Bellocâs Cautionary Tales for Children. In contrast to some of his other songs mentioning one or two animals, Effervescing Elephant contains references to a whole jungle full of animals. The video he made for it is pretty sad and depressing, and rarely seen, so here you go, sunshine!

In one of my personal favourite book reviews I mentioned the time I was tasked to write a 500 word story, and chose to adapt this song for it. Well, here it is - hope you enjoy it! :)
Beneath the benevolent rays of the jungle sun lived an elephant. He was gigantic! Across the distance: a blur of grey, heard loud and clear from the trumpeting noise of his trunk. At least to us itâs a trumpeting noise. The world of animals is an exotic one, and we have evolved beyond understanding the universal language of nature. âPrrraaaahhâ! We hear the sound resonating, echoing a reverberating, deep noise. But itâs âjust noiseâ - animals are blockheaded, right? Wrong. Here follows an elephantâs tale.
âI wonder what I should do todayâ thought the metagrobolised elephant, his brain at end wondering what to do. Â He had small, hematite eyes and a great huge trunk of which he took more than his fair share of food. âBig bully!â squawked one inferior, causing the elephant to decide â rather wickedly, to spread a rumour.
âCome here little oneâ he said, with a malevolent look in his small beady eyes.
âWwâŚWhat is it?â replied Squrk, a common name in the jungle.
âHave you heard aboutâŚthe tiger?â boomed the elephant, menacingly.
âNoâ squeaked Squrk.
âWell you should have!â the elephant laughed, âHeâs a mean cat with claws like giant flesh-tearing thorns, your be his supper before next June!â.
âOhâ was the only word escaping Squrks mouth before he scampered off to warn his friends.
From the burrowing mongooses to the stripy zebras, Squrk ran around warning all that would listen, and most were terribly frightened. But not everyone. A solitary hippopotamus, wallowing in the mud, had the stench of a dozen dirty pieces of rotten carambolas â an assuredly retched smell. Nonetheless, the nervy Squrk approached him impetuously.
âQuick, the tigers on the prowl! With speed he will use his big scary teeth an-â
âNone of thatâ, interrupted the wily hippopotamus, whom had grown sagacious yet weary in his long 33 years, much spent observing stupid water bison.
âButâ Squrk continued, âare you aware that-â
âThat Iâm staying here in the mud? Yes.â interrupted the fat hippo once more, this time with a knowing glint in his eye. âThe mud is deep and the tiger reasonable, though one must eat I supposeâ then added ânow, scamper off and leave me be!â
Squrk was almost home when suddenly he saw the tiger on the roam! It was useless to run. He looked at the ground, digging in his paw and bracing himself for the worst. As much as he tried, he couldnât help but let escape a small whimper. The tiger smiled a large grin, dexterously pouncing towards poor little Squrk in a heartbeat.
âPlease donât eat meâ he begged, but to no avail as the tiger leant in towards him.
âWhat gave you that ideaâ whispered the tiger, âyouâre much too scant.â
And with that, he dashed and mauled a larger foe â he ate the elephant!
That day proved to show that karma even reaches the animal kingdom, and much to his surprise, Squrk saw the greedy, fear-mongering elephantâs demise, and lived happily ever after.
