Today I had the great honor and pleasure touring North Jersey #baseball sites with Dan Wallach, executive director of the #ShoelessJoeJacksonMuseum @ShoelessMuseum in Greenville, SC. We saw @hinchliffstadium in Paterson, #EffaManley’s house and Eagles Parkway (with its commemorative plaque to the 1946 #NegroLeague champion #NewarkEagles) in #Newark, #MonteIrvinOrangePark in Orange, the #RobertoClemente statue in Branch Brook Park, #LarryDoby Field and statue in Paterson and our last stop was the @YogiBerraMuseum in Little Falls, #NJ. Someone wrongly asserted that Effa Lousie Manley was a white woman passing for black. For some reason there's been white historians that have insisted that she was white although there's evidence of her coming from a biracial family in Philadelphia. Her siblings were apparently biracial, but she wasn't according to them. For them it's probably a better sale to state that she was a white woman living as a black woman in the 1930s and 40s due to her success. Effa and her husband Abe Manley came into ownership of the Newark Eagles when he won the expansion team in the Negro League in 1934. She became a powerful influence in growing and strengthening the league, as well as in growing and strengthening the black community in Newark and in Harlem, where her and Abe made their home. She was a prominent member of the NAACP, organized boycotts against Harlem businesses that didn’t hire black employees, while also looking after her players on the Eagles, helping them in every aspect from finding offseason jobs to making down payments on their homes. She hosted a Anti Lynching Day and sold Stop Lyching buttons to bring awareness to what was happening in the 1930s in the lynching of black people. There are 333 individuals elected to the #BaseballHallofFame — exactly one is a woman. #EffaManley, inducted in 2006, owned the legendary #NewarkEagles #baseball team that was the heart and soul of #BrickCity #baseball. Four #Eagles players who won the 1946 #NegroLeague championship went on to be inducted to the #HallofFame — #LeonDay, #LarryDoby, #MonteIrvin and #BizMackey. Today I visited the #Newark home Effa and her husband Abe inhabited and worked from. For the first #FemaleFriday of Black History Month, a short introduction to Effa Manley (1897-1981), the first and only woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Between 1935 and 1948, she was co-owner of the Newark Eagles, a baseball team in the Negro League. There’s a decent body of work on her, including the 2011 book “The Most Famous Woman in Baseball: Effa Manley and the Negro Leagues” by Bob Luke.
