For today's round of Gnome's Failtopia Headcanons, rather than quick-firing down a longer list of characters, I'm only going to provide a single headcanon for each of the four characters introduced as of the first episode, but I'll go into great detail for each of them to make up for that. So much detail, in fact, that I've had to put it under the cut
The Kid:
From what I've gleaned, Dan offhandedly mentioned that he was raised by chill parents, implying a healthy household environment, which I certainly like for him, because I don't think any other aspect of his life is going particularly well with a talking bomb attached to his face. I think he has been excluded from any official schooling institution for the absurd safety risk of the bomb's lit fuse, which isn't the worst when it comes to education, his parents have done a decent job at picking up the pieces with home-schooling and specialised tutors, but it's ensured this kid has had basically zero social interaction with anyone his age, because (unfortunately reasonably) no-one trusts their children to get too close to the bomb. The bomb's sentience and speech are also severe detriments to his social life, and communication skills in general, the bomb's words are often misunderstood to be his, and even when they aren't, he can't say what he actually wants to without the bomb screaming some nonsense that drowns him out. He doesn't hate the bomb, not on a personal level, but he doesn't consider it a friend either, he's still somewhat uncomfortable with thinking of it as a real person given how it relies on ruining his life to exist. Sometimes, he wonders if it'd be easier if the bomb fully controlled their body, and he was fully out of the picture, not interfering with the lifeform basically everybody prioritised over him. He has not been officially diagnosed with depression, but those who know him well (his parents, and some of his more involved tutors) have had their suspicions for a long time, and it's not difficult to figure out why his mental health would be struggling.
Grandma:
As I've previously stated, I have never watched any of the AI Grandma videos/streams, so I'm going entirely off of my perception of her current portrayal within S3. She's a professional bounty hunter, in the business for a century longer than anyone expected her to be, and she's amassed quite the myth about herself in the process, with some underestimating her agility for her age, and others fearing her for thriving when she should be well past her prime, or simply dead already. These perspectives are known to her, but she does not pay them any mind, because all she wants is to live her double life in peace. She's an experienced bounty hunter professionally, but personally, she is still the same kind yet struggling old lady. She has a warped view of her environment, frequently confusing people and objects which no-one fully in their right mind would, but at the same time, she's able to look deeper and engage with her surroundings with a good amount of delicacy, for how little she's able to grasp them on a surface level. The Kid and Shrimp are both mysteries to her from a physical perspective, but emotionally, she recognises The Kid's good head on his shoulders, and Shrimp's loveliness and tenacity. A historic bald spot is a comically strange topic of discussion to open a conversation with, but the reality is that she's making light of a personal struggle she has, and technically shares with her conversation partner, to uplift them both. Her near-blindness and lacking common sense are very real issues of hers, but her emotionality is worth paying attention to as well! And so are her bounty hunting skills if she ever finds them necessary to employ, this boomer will in fact blow you up
Eelon:
For the sake of this concept, let's say that his face is completely uncensored in-universe, much like how Void wouldn't appear as green. Much like Shrimp, he experienced notable bullying in his youth, primarily over his horrific appearance compared to the more palatable creatures of the ocean. Underwater society is quite technologically advanced, notably so in the field of surgery, and since his parents are very wealthy, Eelon absolutely could have afforded a comfortable cosmetic surgery to fix his face. However, he actively refused the offer any time someone brought it up to him. He wanted to prove he could make it in the world regardless of his deformities, and in fact, alter his societal landscape to be easier for people like him, and harder for people like his bullies. However, given his privileged upbringing, this does not result in him bringing any positive change to the ocean, he becomes a competitive and brutal landlord who would actively pollute the water in a heartbeat to line his pockets. He essentially sees his business successes, and the struggles of his opponents/tenants, as the only valid measure of his personal worth, countering how much he was underestimated by those asshole private school kids by becoming an intimidating figure who can make his environment bend to his will. However, he's pretty isolated and miserable, despite his confident independent act, and he envies people like Shrimp who manage to fight back against their adversity with pure kindness, and still somehow perform well financially! However, he still clings onto any excuse he can think of to justify his current lifestyle.
Shrimp:
She has only very recently had her bisexual awakening. It's somewhat embarrassing for her to admit, since she'd been surrounded by openly queer people for more than half of her life by the time she finally realised, but it's the truth. In the ocean, she had never felt any interest like that, she wasn't close enough with anyone in her age range by the time she was old enough to recognise the existence of those feelings. During her time in The Incident, she obviously still didn't develop any such interest, but she did learn quite a lot about the queer community, and vowed to be an unconditional ally just like Failboat was. Her whole brand was based around sharing her love to the world in the face of her own discrimination, of course she would! She did consider the possibility of being queer herself at this time, but only in the sense of feeling slightly like an outsider in the team for being cishet, and she was repeatedly re-assured by her loved ones that she didn't need to rush into labelling herself as anything she wasn't ready for. Post-S2, she went all in on her idol career, which heavily stigmatises holding romantic relationships anyway, so any fleeting crushes she may have had on some of her new friends and/or coworkers were not important and not real in the first place, Shark Heart was her life's passion and she wasn't going to let any nonsense in her personal life get in the way of that! Her years of denial finally reached their end when a concerned friend told her to take a step back from trying to plan the entire 15th Anniversary Tour herself, and have some time to relax and focus on herself before one of the biggest events of her career. She agreed, and of course, her mind wandered during this extended period of alone time, and a lot of things finally clicked together - though she's still very much in the process of figuring everything out.
...
(In case it wasn't obvious, the above is my current Watsonian explanation for the whole deal with Shrimp's preference settings, she hasn't had enough time to think on her sexuality and her thought process is roughly the same as Dan's on the matter)
(Fun fact, this idea was inspired by TCNick3's playthrough of Living the Dream, in which he changed a female Mii's preferences to include women after previously being set to straight, and joked that the character was having her bi awakening in-universe)
Wasn't expecting the first Mii/pseudo-protagonist to be a whole new character at all, but I was certainly pleasantly surprised by how much I came around on him! I had no idea where Daniel was going with the scribble-face on a Default Mii, but the talking bomb head really made the character concept come together, a depressed child who just wants to manage the living weapon attached to his face and constantly talking over him. I like the reversal of the Friendlee dynamic where the facial symbiote isn't a subtle corrupting force, it's just an annoying caveat to The Kid's life. He's also aro/ace rep, which is dope!
Grandma:
I have not watched one iota of Grandma content before now, so I have no idea what any of the immortal assassin lore is actually about, but disregarding the AI Gimmick roots, I'm really interested in her presence here. She's had most of the best comedic moments already, constantly rambling off and failing to understand her surroundings while still endearing herself to everyone and proving herself a threat in a fight. I like the juxtaposition of the first two characters being a young boy and an old woman, also. And she's polyamorous and bi/pansexual!
Eelon:
Very unique to have a main character who's actively designed to be hateable. Past characters like Pirahnyawn may have come across less positively than intended, but are still supposed to be monster-fighting heroes at the end of the day, but in the realm of Big Money Island, where the cast has to fight each other, there's room for actually present antagonists, and Eelon is very effectively set up to be as abhorrent as possible, an ocean landlord who walks anywhere like he owns the place, while rocking the face of a Mario enemy so deformed that it's partially censored, and being a canonically straight man named after Elon Musk. Rancid vibes, perfect for the role of adding stakes
Shrimp:
Did not expect a character return aside from C!Fail or Chat, neither of which actually happened, but I'm very glad for this! Shrimp's a great choice to start with, loved by fans and Dan alike, without incredibly complicated lore to get through to understand her deal. Shoutout to SketchySkittles for that cutscene and new character design (and shoutout to Muffinsnakes for the Grandma cutscene, while I'm at it), does a great job at realising the near-unthinkable concept of a 30-year-old Shrimp. Her newfound confidence in her success as "Shark Heart" is very heartwarming, as is her immediate kinship with the oldest cast member once again! Can't wait to see what the fuck happens with her and Eelon, also. Hopefully it's not what I worry it will be.
...However, there is a significant negative factor about Shrimp's return - at least, for me - which I already made a vent post about, so I won't fully reiterate that here, but TLDR: Love that she's bi, don't love that the option to date non-binary people was excluded, and I really hope that wasn't intentional and will be fixed. (Worth noting that all options were selected for Grandma)
The Gimmick:
Not the best starting-off point, but I completely see what Dan's trying to do here. I really liked Parkour Civilisation, so I'm sure to be a fan of the capitalism-critiquing-video-game-battle-arena-dystopia one of my favourite creators is cooking up, and the RPS implementation does feel like a nice blend of Miitopia's and Modern Failboat's respective nonsense, and wasn't completely out of the blue either. Of course, the main issue is that Dan isn't familiar with Tomodachi Life and only realised halfway through that it doesn't really function as a vessel for the RPS fights to begin with, and while The Kid VS Grandma near the start of the stream went mostly fine, the Eelon battles to end the stream were a massive slog that even Dan didn't really enjoy, since the game kept trying to redirect the combatants to ignore Dan's ragdolling and ties were way too frequent. Just gotta hold out for that arena, then we can actually get cooking with these fights
