During June 1960 the transformation from the Hunter to the Lightning began, although the first aircraft, XM165 was not received into the RAF until the end of the month. The Sqn CO, Sqn Ldr John Howe flew the first sqn sortie on the 14 July. This post concentrates on the difficulties of bringing the type into service, the reasons being standard for most aircraft coming into service. Constant modification programmes, lack of spares and lack of experience of the aircraft, all combined to make it a hard introduction, which was turned around by gaining a rapid increase in knowledge and sheer hard work.
