Kiran Ahmad, apexart fellowship program, July 2019, Day 00
To hope and to have certain expectations - to think of the end - an end. A conclusion - an outcome - before a journey, a story even begins, limits us to experience what the moment in all its entirety has to offer. A contradictory space; a space that proposes expectations, yet forces to believe that there may be none.
I sit waiting, thinking and contemplating, here at the Karachi airport terminal - now I’m the aircraft, waiting to descend to take me to the big Apple - New York, where my month-long journey with apexart begins. I question and ask myself repeatedly - what do I hope to achieve through this opportunity? What are my thoughts and hopes from the fellowship and New York? How will this allow me to grow as an individual - graphic design/visual artist? What will I learn and how will I take that information and contribute to own professional practice and my city; Karachi and it’s diverse communities?
I would like to begin by saying that I am thrilled and excited about being selected, as a fellow and at what this opportunity may bring. I look forward to the moments and experiences it has to offer - the space - the place and its people, with an open heart and an open mind. I hope to be able to take what I can, in moments it allows and explore the space in between; where I am and where I want to be.
I feel that the structure and the openness of the apexart fellowship will help me further fine-tune exiting skills and expand my knowledge. It will give me an opportunity to learn through the City of New York and it’s people. It will provide a space to think, to reflect and to gain a fresh perspective, that will allow me to grow both as an individual and a graphic designer.
Through this program I hope to explore my own potential through the uncertainty, unfamiliarity, to push my own boundaries and to break out of my comfort zone, to experience, grow and inspire. I feel this prospect has come my way for a reason, and I am certain that the apexart fellowship will help me broaden my horizon and I look forward to all the shall follow.
