Drhoz and Purrdence's NZ Trip 2025-2026 : Purrdence's Sidetrip - Mount Sunday
While I spent a day wandering around Christchurch's CBD, Botanical Gardens, and one of the more industrial suburbs looking for interesting weeds and lichens, @Purrdence took a tour up into the mountains west of the city, to fulfil one of her objectives for the trip - visiting LOTR filming locations. In this case, Mount Sunday, location for Edoras, capital city of the Kingdom of Rohan in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Mount Sunday is a rocky hill (but see more geological details below) rising in the middle of the floodplain of the Rangitata River. workers from the surrounding sheep stations would meet there on Sundays, hence the name.
Mount Sunday was chosen after a storm diverted the plane scouting for locations, and they saw the hill in question. After nine months of building the set, and three weeks of filming, it was all dismantled again.
It's also the setting of British writer Samuel Butler's 1872 Utopian novel Erewhon or Over the Range, written after he ran sheep there for 4 years.
Geologically, Mount Sunday has a distinctive profile - a shallow slope on the northwest end, and steep exposed rock on the southeast. That's because it's a roche moutonnée, the result of the Rangitata Glacier encountering an outcrop of harder rock, sliding up over the top, and plucking away chunks of rock on the downstream side. After the Ice Age the glacier retreated, leaving the hill exposed. It still has the marks on the top, where chunks of rock embedded in the ice gouged out linear scars in the stone.
