The manuscript you submit is not the book that gets published.

Not because publishers change your story or take over your voice — but because between submission and publication, a small team of people spend a significant amount of time making sure the book is the best version of itself. Structural editors, line editors, copy editors, proofreaders. Each one reads it differently. Each one finds something.

It's not a quick process. It's not supposed to be.

You ever finish writing, close your doc… then open it again a few minutes later?

And suddenly you’re not reading it the same way anymore.

A line that felt strong now feels off. The emotion doesn’t hit like it did before. A character’s reaction feels slightly wrong… and you can’t ignore it.

That shift? That’s where your mistakes start showing themselves.

Every writer has that moment. The difference is who admits it.

Personal Reflection

Writing this poem taught me how much I love expressing my emotions. When I feel free and able to do so, communication comes easily. My favorite part of this process was rediscovering little gems from myself, like finding self-love notes. In a way, I'm also manifesting my kindred spirit through these words.

It’s supposed to show how chaotic my mind works and how I struggle to write my ideas as they come. The edited version shows me going back to finish the idea. I love that it captures the essence of editing in writing. You can write something and always be able to edit it, and it’ll keep changing. "I'd love to hear from you!

I’ve recently dove into the beta reading process with my first novel. It is a lot different than what I was expecting. Here’s a few things I’ve learned already. Hopefully they will help you in your writing journey.

1. Have a variety of betas.

-You don’t need all the same gender, all the same age, and all the same background. Spice it up. Even if you have a YA contemporary, get a 40-year-old fantasy lover. They will be able to give you pointers for other readers to enjoy your novel. Get all races, all genders, and all backgrounds. YOU NEED EVERY OPINION!

2. Give the chapter and questions out at the same time.

-I give out one chapter every week. At first I was going to give the chapter on Monday and questions on Friday. Sounded freaking great in my head. WRONG. The reader needs both at the same time so their answers are fresh on their mind. *If you let them read the chapter and then give them a call after they read it ignore this tip.*

3. Record every response.

-I keep a notebook with very question written down for every chapter. Each chapter has a page for questions and page for each beta’s responses. I write down all of their answers to my questions. This way when I collect all the beta’s answers, I can see what was a hit with most betas and, more importantly, what was a miss.

4. Make sure they know how important honesty is to you.
