Before mp3 users began blatantly downloading and stealing the works of others digitally, there were people doing this with non-digital music – and since it wasn’t done at such a high volume, most people didn’t really give a damn about it. When a music producer creates music and gets it published to an actual record label, that record is then put in stores for people to buy. But most of us know that songs are usually heard well before the actual vinyl is printed in stores. How is this possible? Radio stations are usually offered a white label or promotional record that cannot be sold, but is used for playing purposes. DJs also had access to these records if they knew the right people in the right pools. One would think that DJing an unreleased track at a party would help out both the DJ and the music producer, since the DJ gets to have something new and the producer gets some free advertising. But these days, doing the same thing with a digital promo can be disastrous. The second that digital version gets copied, it is no longer a promo that is left in the hands of a sole person.
