As long as you notice
I'm hoping that you'll keep your heart open
I'll keep mine open too
If you don't ask, I won't tell
Just know that, just know that
It all hurts, it all hurts just the same

so someone asked me for a tutorial on how I draw face shapes/noses etc!
I want to say I’m NOT a professional. I have no teaching or actual formal learning under my belt, so this is all stuff I have learned on my own.
But here we go, info below!
To start, the BEST ways to drawing faces and noses and eyes is:
Stare at people
draw draw draw DRAW
Stare at people on the train. At the mall. In your classrooms. Look at your best friends, your parents, your classmates! Start breaking down their faces into shapes, into distinguishable features!
Do they have big lips? Are their eyes droopy or wide open? Do they have a big nose? What part is big, the tip, the bridge, the nostrils? Is their nose long or short? Does it stick out? Is their forehead wide? Are their eyebrows thick and long? Short? Thin? Start looking at the people around you and what makes their faces unique, and that helps a lot! You don’t even have to draw them (tho it helps) but just looking and breaking down will start to help you!
Alright here we go yall picture time.
1) Get your base
I always start with a circle and lines, plus the ear to show where things are gonna go. The ear helps me determine where my eyes will go (relative) and where my jaw line is gonna start. Consider the vertical line will figure out symmetry, nose base, and length, while the horizontal line will help you guide your eyes, and perspective.
Consider that you can accomplish a lot with this basic concept. You can determine head shape, length, and width! Play around with it until you find something you’re happy with.
2)get your face shape
So now you want to create your jawline! Is it rounder or more angular. Is the face long? Now you can determine these things! By making the jaw line (the line at the ear) longer/ shorter/ angled/round, you can create some face dynamic.Same with the jaw, cheek, and face shape! More rounded, more square, where you finally decide to connect it, all of these things affect it!
3) flesh it out!!!
start adding your shapes! Here is when you’re gonna think about your nose shape and your other facial features. Widen your skull base (because we really arent that flat in the back) and think about what type of nose. I like to start with a simple circle, and depending on the size and orientation of the circle, that affects the nose!
Now is when all that studying from before comes into play. Your nose and forehead are connected, leading to a ZILLION types of possibilities.
First, think about the forehead. Is it short? Does it stick out? does it blend into the bridge of the nose or protrude noticeably.
Nose time! Is the bridge short or long? Does it have bumps? Is the tip round or sharp? Does it go up? Down? Is the nose itself wide? Is your nose bridge curved, or at an angle??? Are the nostrils wide? are they angled up or down? Or maybe they are straight! All of this makes a difference!! It’s all things to consider, and it changes the face immensely, as you can see.
All 3 of those faces have the same base (copy pasted and everything) but you can see how the nose and the forehead change it immensely, even without any other features.
4) Eyebrows!!!
Eyebrows are another VERY defining feature, and they can express so much emotion just with their angles. Look at my second face in the corner. I offset the eyebrow JUST a tiny bit, and it already looks questioning. Imagine if you added dramatic changes!
Important thing to think about in eyebrows are arch, thickness, and length.
1) Arch- are they big ol’ brides above the eye? or are they flat with no arch at all? Some people have a curve at the end or the middle, while some have none at all.
2) Thickness- is it one pencil stroke or are they bushy and wild?
3) Length- do they start at the nose and end all the way at the corner of the eye? Or does the eyebrow stop where the pupil starts? Do they have a unibrow?
Eyebrows are a great way to add some uniqueness to a character without doing much!
5)
Ears also come in different shapes and sizes!!! Are they detached? Are they saggy? If so is it from age or from wear? Think about if theyre long or short, if they stick out, if they have an angle/ point at the top, or if they are round all the way. This can make a difference in a characters look!
6) Eyes!
so eyes are tricky, and there are thousands of tutorials on them ( i skipped lips bc mine are v generic for the most part!!!!) My big suggestion with eyes is look at lots of different eyes and how they work/ look.
Eye balls are, in fact, ROUND. Everyone’s eyeballs are round, I promise. the same type of round. What changes is how your skin is pulled over the eyeballs. Pupils always stay in the middle of the iris, and the iris is what moves. Remember that! Pupils are literally BLACK HOLES in your eyes! Its where light goes in so you can see!
THink about whether the lid goes straight across, droops on one side, and if the lower lid is doing the same! It creates all kinds of neat effects and looks.
Is the top lid folded? is it big or small? Is there a monolid (think east asians) or are they heavy lidded (meaning a very visible crease between the ball part and the area between your eyebrow and eye.) Are lashes long or short and sparse? Maybe only the bottom ones are visible? Or the top? All important!
... So that is p much it! That’s all I can offer! As you can see there are ENDLESS possibilities to creating faces and how to draw them! Go crazy and try new things out!
i drew in photoshop for the first time and I caved and got Kyle Websters sampler brush set. I love them and I hate PS a little less. I made myself a new icon and I drew Lilith ;,)
