BIOGRAPHY
A Southern Prince is what best describes Emerson Graham Covington Jr. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, to a Senator and a stay at home mother, Emerson never had to struggle for anything. His mother made sure he was cared for and loved and his father, who came from old money, made sure that his son attended the best schools and had the best things. The young boy was living in a perfect world and he enjoyed it very much. However, nothing is ever perfect, and after many fainting spells, Emerson was diagnosed with Long QT syndrome. This meant his heartbeats were chaotic and caused his fainting spells. The doctor warned the Covingtons that this could lead to seizures and even sudden death.
As someone who was raised in the perfect setting, Emerson wondered why he couldn’t be the perfect boy. Why did his heart have to fail him in a way that stopped him from doing things he wanted to do like play sports and skydive. Why couldn’t he live freely? For a long time, Emerson was angry at himself, his heart, his parents, God. For a while, he refused to believe it could stop him from being who he wanted to. Only after a bad fainting spell did he finally accept his fate and began taking more care of himself.
Two years after he was diagnosed, the Covington family was blessed with twin girl. Two beautiful babies who Emerson devoted himself too. They became the most important thing in his life and he loved them like no other. His sisters were everything and when he was forced to go to boarding school, away from them, he became angry. He forced his parents to choose the closest boarding school to home so he could visit his sisters any time he pleased.
Boarding school was a breeze for Emerson. No one knew about his diagnosis so they didn’t know the Georgia prince wasn’t perfect. Everyone loved him, the teachers, students, and anyone in between. He bent himself to their will and still held the most power. He gave everyone what they wanted and still got the most out of everything. The power never went to Emerson’s head because he himself knew that it didn’t matter. Power and money didn’t matter to him. At any time his heart could beat too fast and he could drop dead on the spot. He could be gone in an instant and the power, money, fame, fortune, would not matter one bit. This mind set made Emerson keep his distance, emotionally from people. Sure he dated but only for short periods of time and never anyone he could see a future with. He didn’t want anyone to miss him badly when he died, and he knew it was a matter of when and not if. He threw himself into his writing and made up stories of people who were free and who lived. They lived in a way Emerson never could.
Coming to Blackthorne was somewhat hard for Emerson. He was very far away from Georgia and his sisters but his parents insisted he attend, only wanting the best for their son. Even though Emerson knew college didn’t matter to him, he attended because his parents wanted him to and he wanted to make them happy. His time at Blackthorne was interesting. He wasn’t boy king anymore but he still had power. He still had the ability to make people his when he wanted to. But the older he got, the more he broke away from close friendships and emotional relationships. Death was close and Emerson Covington Jr. felt it in his bones, muscles, and heart.
