That’s me holding the yellow catfish at 16 years old, along with my dad and little brother. I grew up as an avid carnivore in South Texas. In fact I still love the outdoors and I enjoy bow hunting and bow fishing. Unfortunately, by the time I was 30, my blood pressure was around 149/90. I had to change something. Today, I am mostly plant-based and it has taken me 7 years to be okay with NOT having bacon and eggs for breakfast. BUT, my blood pressure was 116/80 yesterday. I can also hike longer and benchpress more than my carnivorous family and peers. My point: I’ve always had a connection with the outdoors and changing to a more sustainable lifestyle doesn’t have to be all at once. Start small. Our website even has a video about making some hearty meatless burgers. And, being an environmentalist doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. In fact, when I really crave meat, I still OCCASIONALLY hunt for invasive species such as the pigs that tear up the oat fields. Or, I’ll go spear fishing for invasive lionfish.
