Question about Solstice and Eclipse, how did they decide on what vallaslin designs to get?

The simple answer is that it is a vow to recover and protect the secrets of the Dalish, which falls in line with the role of a Keeper. Being children gifted with magic, both Eclipse and Solstice trained as apprentices, with the idea that one of them will become First to Keeper Deshanna and the other will have to assume the role of First with a different clan, but they both needed the same education and commitment.
The long answer allows me to look a bit into how they grew up:
The Chantry teaches that the Maker abandoned his creations, thus rendering him an absent figure (how convenient) and the Andrastian faith works a lot on the "just trust me, bruv" principle.
Meanwhile, hundreds, if not thousands, of elven temples, altars, artifacts, glyphs, etc. lie scattered around the world, still working, thanks to ancient magic that never lost its potency.
For this reason, a lot of Dalish clans (not all, but it includes Lavellan) would not see their gods as mythical, absent figures; it's not just about meditating on archetypes and parables. Every time they solve temple puzzles, leave the right offerings, complete various trials, they are rewarded with knowledge and power. This makes the gods very real to the Lavellan clan (just, not how Solas reveals it to be eventually).
For the Lavellans, their gods walk the same earth, watching and judging their followers. If the followers are deemed worthy, the gods will bestow blessings. Just like the Dalish themselves, their gods appreciate deeds, not prayers.
The siblings would have explored the wilds, as part of their training, and would have solved puzzles related to Dirthamen, which granted them specific rewards, like, a piece of fragmented lore, a tome, an understanding of forgotten Elvhen words.
Both Eclipse and Solstice are knowledge-oriented. They loved the complexity of Dirthamen's puzzles and enjoyed wisdom as reward more than they would have enjoyed an enchanted weapon. But while Solstice seeks the mysteries of the world, Eclipse's motivations are turned inward, into self-discovery. The mythology surrounding Dirthamen as the god who gave the elves the greatest mysteries appealed to their hearts in different ways.
But the mythos about Dirthamen finding and reuniting with his twin seemed even more relevant to the siblings, as Eclipse had already made the decision to leave clan Lavellan. By choosing the same vallaslin, the siblings are also taking an oath to always find each other. Eclipse even waited for Solstice to come of age so they could get it at the same time, and only afterwards departed. For this reason, Solstice's removal of her vallaslin felt like a personal betrayal to him. (He comes to respect it, eventually, but... That initial hurt... Oh boy...)
