E-scooter trials by city police
Eclimo Sdn Bhd, producer of the first e-scooter and e-motor cycles in Malaysia, has proposed to supply electric bikes to the police patrolling units in the capital city in a bid to reduce fuel costs.
Executive director Datuk Dennis Chuah said the proposal is currently at the preliminary stage and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) planned to use 33 electric motorcycles in the capital city by this year.
He said the use of the hybrid powertrains was expected to save 35% of fuel costs, and besides being eco-friendly, it could reduce carbon emissions by up to 30%.
âThe deal is expected to be concluded by November or December. PDRM is undertaking a trial now.
âDue to the support of Malaysian Green Technology Corporation, they are seriously looking into using electric bikes for their patrolling units,â he said after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Malaysian Green Technology Corporation and Eclimo yesterday.
The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia 2014.
The partnership is aimed at encouraging the use of electric motorcycles and scooters as part of pursuing sustainable and green solutions in transportation.
On sales, Chuah said the company had sold 250 units of electric bikes since 2013 and plans to double it next year.
Asked on Eclimoâs interest to venture into overseas market, he said Malaysia is still a market for two wheelers with about 500,000 new units registered every year.
He said the Malaysian market is still sizeable for the company to promote its products.
âFor now we are focusing on MalaysiaâŚwe have no plans to go overseas yet. But of course, when there is an opportunity, we will definitely look into it.â
