How does outdoor nature play contribute to holistic child development?
How are educators drawing upon natural environments in their work with young children?
What strategies and practices can educators incorporate into their learning contexts to support children’s engagement in outdoor nature play?
How can educators center equity and justice in their work with young children outdoors?
This seminar will engage students in dialogue about the opportunities, constraints, and possibilities of nature-centered early learning for supporting all young children in building relationships in and with nature for child, community, and ecological well-being.

For one credit: weekly readings and activities, observation at a nature preschool program, and participation in a workshop on Saturday, April 27th
For two credits: in addition to the above, write a 3-5 page synthesis paper
ECFS 495 - policy, child advocacy, intersectionality of poverty, race, culture, gender, and sexual orientation for families of young children
This quarter we have a unique and 1st of its kind class that will provide students with a never before opportunity to learn about child advocacy and policy making through the lens of the families directly impacted.
Panels of parent leaders will share about their experiences and perspectives on early childhood education, the child welfare system, public benefits, the criminal justice system, access to higher education, and the public-school system.
Topics will include the impacts of the intersections of poverty, race, culture, gender, and sexual orientation for families of young children. This class will include one site visit, considerable debate and discussion, project based learning and assessment, and most importantly conversation and dialogue with parents and peers.

Admissions timeline for Winter 2019:
Applications are accepted for Winter 2019 admission until October 15th, 2018. Applications can be submitted until 11:59PM on October 15th. Late applications are not accepted. Click here to begin the application process (UW NetID login required)
Admission decisions for current UW students will be sent on a rolling basis during November and December 2018. Current UW students are required to attend an on-campus orientation session that will occur before the end of the Autumn 2018 quarter. Additionally, all admitted students are required to attend an individual advising session to complete course planning and formally complete the change of major process.
Admission criteria:
§ GPA minimum for UW coursework: 2.50 cumulative.
§ Please note, there are no prerequisite courses required for admission to the ECFS major.
§ Applicants are encouraged to gain experience in early childhood and/or family support programs (for example, by observing, volunteering, or working) and indicate such experience in their personal statement. Please note that previous experience is not a requirement to apply.
Application Materials:
§ Personal Statement - The essay must be no longer than two pages, one-inch margins, double-spaced, 12pt font. Please include your first and last name in the header. Do not include a title in the essay. The personal statement should reflect your interest and commitment to the field of early childhood and family studies. This is an opportunity for you to tell us why this major is a good fit for you in preparation for a career in working with young children and families in educational or related settings (health care, mental health, etc.). The personal statement is to be completed by the applicant only; without any editing assistance.

Description
This independent study provides a rich, experiential learning opportunity for students interested in working with young children with and without disabilities. Students will serve as interns for an inclusive school break camp program, facilitating social skills through field trips and science experiments. In addition to supporting campers in day-to-day activities, students will participate in a professional learning community led by experts in the field. ECFS 495- the Baby Prison Project In this unique class, you will go behind the scenes to learn about the nationally recognized Early Head Start Program located in the Purdy Correctional Center in Gig Harbor. Instead of a paper or a final exam, students will put together fundraising, media, donation, and advocacy plans to strengthen the Early Head Start program. See the flyer to learn more!
