PLA unveils China's first psychological warfare plane
The PLA Air Force has modified its Y-8 transport aircraft into the GX-7, which is being touted as the country's first aerial platform for waging psychological warfare, reports the Hubei Daily based in Wuhan.
Based on the blueprint of the Soviet-built An-12 transport, there are about 20 variants of Y-8 aircraft currently in service with the PLA, The plane has also been exported to countries including Myanmar, Pakistan, Sudan, Tanzania, Venezuela and Sri Lanka. The Gao Xin Seven or GX-7 is one of them.
The GX-7 has the ability to broadcast propaganda through radio frequencies and television signals, as well as jamming enemy communications.
The plane, with a range of 6,000 kilometers, makes China the second nation to possess an aerial psychological operations platform after the United States. The EC-130J aircraft of the US Air Force's 193d Special Operations Wing were used widely during the conflict over Libya in 2011, which broadcast radio transmissions in English, French and Arabic to encourage the population to rise up against the Gaddafi regime.
