@ebsledge.
   He looks like you could pick him up. Worse, like you should, and once youâd done that you ought to keep going and put him right in your breast pocket, or pin him to your lapel, or put him somewhere everyone could see like on the mantelpiece or at the centre of the dinner table, and then say: look, look at this.
   I find myself hating him on principle.
   âThis is psychology, right?â Nobody else is on this corridor, so I have to ask him. The lady at the desk told me to take a left then go up two flights of stairs, and the class would be on the right, all of which I did, but thereâs a thread of paranoid anxiety running through me that I canât snap.
Why canât I ever just let myself properly enjoy things? (from Sledge)

      â âcause â â âcause your parents stifled you, he wants to say but doesnât.  however they ended up like this, it doesnât matter: snafu, with his legs stretched out and crossed at the ankle, heels resting on a stack of unopened mail on the coffee table; and sledge, arm dangling off the arm of the couch, legs stretched out, head in snafuâs lap.  snafu puts a hand in sledgeâs hair and runs his fingers from the roots to the ends.
     heâs always been jealous of people whose parents stifled them.  heâd like to have been suffocated by a parent.  heâd like to have grown up mollycoddled and made warm and vibrant and furred at the edges like old technicolor film footage.  instead he got a father who left at the first opportunity, and a mother who he wishes had left too.  it would have meant something, to be worthy of stifling.
      â âcause you think too much, â  he says, pensively, after a pause.  â you always thinkin, sledge.  i see your face go that way. your eyebrows get furrowed.  you overthinkin.  you even doin it now.  sometimes you just gotta  â  do. â

ebsledge:
âYâknow, if youâd phrased that in the form of a question, I mightâve believed youâ for about five minutes.â
An offended huff escaped his lips, eyebrows raising as he swayed on the spot, very much drunk despite his previous statement. Which had very much been slurred, and there was no surprise Sledge - despite being such a fresh faced boot - had caught on right away.Â
But Leckie was reluctant to admit to anything. Even in his drunken state, he was as stubborn as ever, and he wasnât about to let the new guy make him admit to anything whatsoever.Â
âWhat you talking about, boot? Iâm as sober as they come.â A proud grin flickered over his lips as he sat himself down, probably a bit too close for comfort. âSee? Can even sit down properly and everything. Had I been drunk I would have fallen over.â

      â hey, delta psi. â  snafu is about eighty percent sure he saw this kid, milkbottle white with a shock of red hair, milling awkwardly nearby the USMC stand earlier today.  he lingered and then left, and snafu didnât really think much about him because he was too busy resenting being stuck telling all these impressionable lily-livered kids to join the corps.  whoever picked him for this job was a fucking idiot.  didnât persuade nobody of nothing.  but now theyâre both at the grocery store less than a half hour before itâs set to close, and snafuâs perusing the mixers for tonic water and ron weasley over here is close enough that snafuâs sharp stare must feel like itâs going right through him.  â better not be any alcohol in that basket of yours. â
