So I have decided to start a little side thing where I review books that I read some time ago and haven’t made reviews about. But they will be mini because I read them long enough ago that I don’t remember specific details to leave long, detailed reviews (though, if I ever re-read them, I’ll do long ones). So here this goes! Mini reviews of 5 Star Reviews I read since January 2019
Tamsin by Peter S. Beagle
Genre: Children’s Fantasy
Keys aspects: magic, Fae/Faery creatures, England, ghosts, old legends
Mini Review: This book is so charming. As a huge Celtic/Irish mythology nerd, I loved reading this book that had so many (my favorite is phooka and he was in it!!). It tells the tale of a young girl becoming entangled in mysteries with ghosts and faeries. I just loved it so much. It was so fun.
Witches of Ash and Ruin by E. Latimer
Key aspects: bisexuality, lesbianism, magic, Celtic Mythology, Ireland, monsters, evil gods
Mini Review: This book was everything I wanted and more. It was so dark, it was so brutal, and it featured so many cool aspects of Celtic mythology that I have been craving. I loved every damn second of it, and I can’t wait for there to be more.
The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
Genre: Adult Supernatural/Historical Fiction
Key aspects: ghosts, murders, serial killers, hauntings, creepy, 1970s and 1980s
Mini review: Simone St. James is my go-to author when I want to read something creepy, as I have read all her books (and in my own personal opinion-- don’t hate me!-- I think she does creepy and haunted way better than Stephen King). This book was her latest and I seriously couldn’t stop reading it. The mystery in it was so good, the ghosts and hauntings were creepy and perfect, and I was on the edge of my seat. Edgy, dark, and oh, so creepy.
House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig
Genre: YA Fantasy/Fairy Retelling
Key aspects: creepy, ocean, hauntings, fairy tale retellings, twelve dancing princess, mystery
Mini Review: This was another good book that was creepy. It was eerie with ghosts and mysteries, and I stayed up late reading this book, even if it made me look out my dark window uncomfortably. It is a fairytale retelling, which I loved, and how different she made it! It was so phenomenal and I will throw this book at everyone I can.
The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones
Key aspects: the dead rising, mystery, adventure, creepy, fairy tale feeling
Mini Review: This book could be considered horror, in some regard, because it does feature things that are dead coming back from the grave. And it just had that perfect feeling of something being scary and creepy and horrifying. But it was an adventure, filled with magic and mysteries, and I absolutely loved it.
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
Key aspects: magic, fairytales, stories, mystical
Mini Review: This book is so hard to talk about and describe. It is a wild ride of imagination and differences, and she really discusses the idea of stories in this book (kids wanting to escape to a made up world). I met Erin Morgenstern last year for the launch of this book (I cried, my god), and she talked a lot about this and I just think it was ingenious. It was beautiful and magical. The Night Circus is my favorite book ever (I’m going to reread it soon, so I'll make a review!), so of course I had to read her next one. And I couldn’t stop falling into this magical world.
Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Genre: Adult/Historical Fiction
Key aspects: 1970s, musicians, scandal, drugs and drinking
Mini Review: Man this book was fantastic! I will admit, the writing style is a little strange and hard at first (it is written like a recording of interviews), but I ended up loving it. I don’t know how Reid wrote a book in this fashion and made you still envision everything that happened like any other book, but my god, did she do it for me. This book is historical fiction, and loosely based off the real-life band Fleetwood Mac, during this prime in the 1970s. But I loved these characters. I love how we saw all sides of situations, that we got deep into their own thoughts by just their words. It is a great book, I highly suggest it, and I can’t wait for the Amazon Prime show to come out!
Well, that’s it for mini reviews for now. But I did enjoy making these, so I’ll definitely do more in the future!
