E vs the "Cure" for Autism.
So let me start from the ending. The reason I don't support any proposed curing of autism is that...
1) I feel it opens the path for literally brainwashing the masses on a genetic level. If they can find a means to make an autistic person neurotypical, what else about a person's brain can they change. Make them more docile, susceptible to propaganda and advertising, more loyal to whatever forces are in control? It's a very slippery slope that I know if given a chance, a lot of powerful people would dive right in.
2) Because there's no telling how this would affect the consciousness. For all that we know, it could be essentially killing them and replacing them with someone that looks and sounds like them and has all the memories, but is different on a fundamental level with different likes and hates.
I've seen some autistic people being supportive of the concept but I feel a good chunk of them have been lead astray to believe that their autism is a separate part of themselves instead of an active part of their being. If you were to try and filter out what's autistic from what's nonautistic in me, you would get every superficial aspect of myself on the nonautistic side, but all the important E-ness of me aspects would be on the autistic side.
On the fundamental level, an autistic person has no hidden neurotypical self hidden away in a secret brain pocket and I'm sorry that the world has tricked and or made you feel that it would be better if you were neurotypical.
Every hard part of my life has been caused by having to live in a neurotypical world designed specifically to cater to their needs and wants. I'm willing to bet that most people on the autistic spectrum if they thought about it could recognize the parts where they wished they were neurotypical directly correspond to instances where they had to deal with being in a neurotypical world. Got yelled at for not understanding a person's vaguely worded instructions, or because your tone is flat, or you raise your voice when you're excited, or because you don't get what someone wants and how dare you ask them.
I'm not against technology to assist people on the spectrum. Machines to aid in communication, creating connections, helping with stimulation, and all that good stuff. That's great stuff. I'm saying I'm against technology to "CURE" autism on the grounds of hypothetical ethics regarding changing a person's brain wiring and all the potential stuff powerful people could do with it if given a chance.
Yes, it does sound a little like something from a conspiracy theory however I feel it's a logical step the research could take if given a chance and I think it should be nipped in the bud before it's allowed to reach that point.
