My Rook can't conceptualize an idea of "after." Their only concern is beating the gods and after that? That future doesn't exist. They can only focus on the present and the immediate future.
That's why they get frustrated when Neve won't live in the present and keeps pushing them away because she doesn't know what the future will hold. Rook never knows what the future will hold, but that's what makes the present so important. They're in love NOW. They want to be together NOW. There is no future, so why even think about it.
Their trauma has given them dyschronia. They live in the present moment. The plan to kill the gods is always about the next step. Step One? Find the gods. Step Two? Everything else. The team members have long term issues that need solving? Then let's solve them right now, so we can get back to Step One.
The future isn't guaranteed. Every day has its own to-do list and when the day is over, the list is done. New day? New tasks.
That's why they're optimistic. They'll make it until tomorrow or they won't. They'll deal with tomorrow when they wake up. What's the current problem to solve? How can I help right now? Where do we need to go? It's done? What next?
Self-sacrificing because they have no concrete sense of self.
