âI donât know about you guys, but Iâm hungry,â Liam says, grimacing as he starts packing up his things. Theyâve been studying here at the library for nearly three hours already but Louis feels like heâs barely made a dent. âDo you want to grab something to eat?â
âThanks, but no thanks,â Louis says immediately, eyes darting to the library entrance as the doors swing open and someone enters. Except itâs just an omega girl, messing with her scarf. He slumps, disappointed. He only glances back at the others when Zayn clears his throat, flushing apologetically. âYou all go ahead though,â he assures them.
âYouâre going to stay here?â Liam says, frowning. âI think weâve studied enough, donât you think? My eyes are burning, for fuckâs sake.â
âJust want to go over some of these concepts one last time,â Louis mumbles, ducking his head to hide the blush coloring his cheeks when Zayn sends him a knowing look.
âWe can technically run through some more flashcards on the way,â Perrie chimes in, scrolling through her phone and most likely searching for a place. âEmma told me about this new place on Fourth thatâs apparently really good.â
âNo, really itâs fine, go on without me,â Louis stresses, pulling his textbook out of Liamâs reach when he tries to pick it up. âI think I need to do some independent revising anyway.â
âAre you sure, Lou?â Liam asks.
âIf youâre really worried about the test, we can meet up again tomorrow,â Perrie says, clearly assuming that Louis is overwhelmed. Well, he is, but not because of that.
âI just really need to study by myself,â he insists. He should have come up with a better excuse for not going out with them and then come back to the library discreetly, he thinks frustratedly. But itâs too late now to backtrack. âSeriously, go on!â
âJust tell them the truth,â Zayn murmurs in a low voice, coughing right after. Louis shoots him a warning glance.
Unfortunately for Louis, Liam and Perrie both caught the exchange. âWhat?â they both ask in unison.
âNothing,â Louis squeaks, cheeks turning even more red.
Perrie narrows her eyes, looking from his flustered face to Zaynâs exasperated one. âWhat is it?â
âItâs nothing. Zayn is stupid,â Louis says. He gestures to emphasize but ends up knocking over his pencil box, sending pencils and highlighters and other random crumpled up pieces of paper spilling onto the floor. He groans, chair dragging against the carpet as he drops to his knees to pick them up.
âIt sounds like something,â Perrie continues to needle, crouching down to help him.
âItâs not a big deal,â Louis deflects, shoving a handful of pens back into the pink pouch. âItâs genuinely nothing, actually. Thereâs nothing to be told, just -â
âLouis is pining over some alpha that sometimes hangs out at the library when his friend is working as an aid,â Zayn blurts.
Louis sighs. âI hate you.â
âAn alpha?â Liam exclaims, sounding confused.
âYour future alpha?â Perrie says, perking up immediately. âLou, you need to tell me everything. Like, now!â
He groans. âThereâs nothing to tell,â he grumbles. âHeâs just⊠really cute. And he smells so good. And he doesnât even know I exist.â He groans again.
âYet,â Perrie says loudly, getting the attention of a beta from another table that glares at them. âHe doesnât know you exist yet,â she whispers, lips curling up into what Louis has dubbed her âschemingâ smile in the past.
âOh, no,â he says, recognizing the look she sends Zayn. He shakes his head wildly. âNo, no, no way. Whatever youâre thinking, itâs a big no.â
âCâmon, Lou, youâve been fawning over this alpha for a month,â Zayn says and Louis makes an indignant noise, crossing his arms with a pout. âYou need to just get it over with and talk to him.â
âWhy canât he talk to me?â Louis whines, tipping his head back with a sigh. âIâve tried everything. Sitting attractively, looking for books in the aisle next to the one heâs standing in, wearing those low-neck tops that usually work like catnip.â
âYeah, except every time he even gets close to looking at you, you hide behind a book!â Zayn accuses, narrowing his eyes. âDonât deny it, Iâve seen it with my own two eyes!â
âThatâs not true,â he insists anyway. âAlphas are dumb!â
âAlphas are dumb so you need to make it easy for him,â Perrie says seriously. âGo up to him. Let him get a whiff of your scent and see that pretty neck and heâll be hooked, Iâd bet a million dollars on it.â
Louis turns to Zayn. âI hate you,â he repeats.
âPerrieâs the one making a plan,â he complains, offended.
âI despise you.â
âBoth of you, shut up,â Perrie says, clapping her hands together. âSo obviously none of us are going to the cafe.â Both Louis and Liam groan, but for two entirely different reasons. âQuiet! This is important.â She turns to Louis with a solemn expression on her face. âWhat time does he normally show up?â
âSix thirty,â he answers reluctantly.
They all turn to look at the clock at the same time, right as the minute hand joins the hour hand at the big six. Itâs six thirty.
âI hate all of you,â Louis decides, dropping his head into his hands.
âOkay, letâs practice whatâs going to happen when he walks in,â Perrie rushes, eyes wide. âLou, what does he look like?â
âWhat does who look like? What are we talking about again?â he asks, heart pounding in his chest. Any minute now, Harry Styles is going to walk through that door and his friends are going to embarrass him and ruin any chance of him ever being interested in Louis.
âHeâs tall. Curly hair. Green eyes,â Zayn offers, and Louis throws the damn pencil case at him. âDimples too.â
âLiam, pretend to be the alpha,â Perrie commands.
âHi, Iâm the alpha,â Liam says, voice monotone and face blank. Zayn masks his laugh with a cough.
Perrie is not impressed. âGive me something to work with,â she says. âWe only have a few minutes and we need a plan.â
âAre we going to watch?â Zayn asks, sounding eager.
âNo,â Louis says, right as Perrie and Liam say, âYes.â He glares at all of them. âDonât you dare! Harryâs going to think Iâm so -â
âSo his name is Harry,â Perrie grins. âLouis and Harry sittinâ in a tree -â
âGuys, Iâm still hungry,â Liam says woefully, eyeing the clock.
âYou know what? Letâs go, Liam,â Louis says, standing up abruptly. âIâm not doing this.â
Perrie and Zayn both protest but he brushes them off, shaking his head. Heâll just stick to his sensual reading tactics and hope it one day works. Thereâs no way heâs approaching Harry today, especially with his nosy friends in close vicinity.
âThanks, but no thanks,â he repeats his words from earlier. He grabs his jacket and shrugs it on, pulling his books up and hugging them to his chest. âLiam, letâs -â
He freezes as the library door swings open and Harry steps in. âShit.â

Harry has gotten used to the barrage of voices in his head.
Heâs gotten used to the echo of other peopleâs problems embedding themselves in his mind, digging in and taking root, infesting him. Heâs learned how to detach from himself and ignore the chaos, letting the voices dwindle into a low thrum behind his temples, irritating but not painful.
Itâs been about fifteen years since Harry first manifested his powers. Fifteen years since he woke up and heard the familiar lilt of his motherâs voice ring through his head even though she was nowhere to be seen. It was something about the dentist, Harry remembers. His mother making a mental note to reschedule Gemmaâs appointment at the dentist because she had a Chemistry test that day. He was only ten then.
That was the first thought, nothing more than a soft whisper in his head. Something he brushed away along with the dew of sleep, blaming his sluggish cognizance for the strange occurrence. But it hadnât been the last. The voices kept coming - his sister, his stepdad, Jake from school. They grew louder too, prodding at his ears and throbbing in his skull.
The confusion and helplessness that tore through him, consuming him, is something that sticks with him even now. And though itâs been fifteen years - fifteen years of learning and growing and gaining control - the feeling of lostness hasnât faded. Itâs settled deep in his bones, reminding him every day that he can hear other peopleâs thoughts so loudly that itâs hard to separate them from his own.
But Harry doesnât like to dwell on that too much, knowing those types of worries are the kind one can drown in if they wander too far. For the most part, heâs come to terms with his abilities. Heâs come to terms with being alone, knowing that heâs been given this gift - this burden - to carry on a path that no one else knows.
Thereâs no explanation for it either, he knows. So many questions heâs spent his life searching for answers to only to accept that some secrets will never be unfolded. So he tolerates.
Harry tolerates the voices and the noises and the fact that heâll never know true quiet with another person. He tolerates the loneliness and the weight on his shoulders of thousands of thoughts and dreams and secrets that he wasnât given but didnât take either. He tolerates it.
Sometimes he even lets himself enjoy it. Like now, as he sits on the Tube on the way to his job interview, surrounded by people and voices and thoughts. Heâs let them all fade away to some extent, wisps of words still cutting through his blocking attempts. Heâs also learned to accept that no matter how hard he tries, some thoughts always break through his defenses.
Thatâs not the point though. Harry purses his lips, trying to be discreet as he scans the people around him, looking for someone interesting while maintaining his composure. Someone whose thoughts are quieter and more subdued than the harsh babbles of average people.
He finds him quickly. A man around his age but dressed a lot more casual, worn jeans and a sweater two sizes too big, sleeves falling over slim fingers that tap anxiously against the edge of his seat. Heâs looking down, a soft fringe falling delicately over his forehead. Harry canât see his face but he can see the tension in his shoulders, the way he hunches in on himself, making himself smaller than he already is.
Thereâs something familiar in the weariness Harry sees etched in his limbs. Something familiar about the nervous energy radiating from his body, like itâs pushing in on him and heâs letting it, exhausted from fighting it. Itâs familiar.
So Harry opens his mind, channeling his abilities to him and wondering what heâll find. What plagues you? he wonders.
A minute passes and Harry frowns when heâs still empty handed. Not even a thread of a thought or a hint that oneâs there. Itâs⊠silent.
Harry straightens up, brows furrowing as he studies the boy. Minds are never silent, is the thing. Itâs another thing heâs learned and another thing he tolerates. Another burden he carries. Minds are never silent.
This⊠this is strange. Strange and unusual.
Unable to comprehend this unexpected change of events, he tries again, pushing harder. He feels his temples throb, lips twisting into a grimace as his vision gets a bit blurry like it always does when heâs reaching past his usual barriers. He shouldnât be extending his powers like this. There are boundaries - ones heâs set for himself to maintain some distance, to maintain some respect when his abilities are the exact opposite.
But he canât help it. Heâs rattled by this, that intimate feeling of confusion and being lost filling his throat. He pushes and pushes, a frisson of heat crackling inside him. Just as he feels that it's going to work - that he can see the beginning ribbons of a thought - it all snaps.
As in literally snaps. He jerks with it, accidentally letting out a choked sound that has the lady whoâs been chatting on the phone to her sister across from him looking at him in concern. His lips pull of their own accord, stretching into a polite and apologetic smile, charming and blank.
When she returns to her call, Harry exhales shakily, fingers curling into his suit pants and wrinkling the smooth fabric. He squeezes his eyes shut, spots dancing over his lids. What just happened?
He had been reaching but the connection snapped - it broke. This has never happened, Harry thinks hysterically. This has never happened. He glances back at the man, a lump rising in his throat. What just happened?
Who are you?
As if sensing Harryâs intense stare and bristling discomfort, the man lifts his head and turns to look at him.
The Hesperides finally emerge from the trees and gather in the garden late evening, singing amongst themselves with voices as sweet as nectar. They donât look surprised to see Harry when he comes out from behind the tree, only calling for him to come closer and get his feet wet.
He doesnât go in the water, far too wary of their cheerful dispositions after the hardships of the past few days. The seven nymphs circle around him and coo at his torn clothes and dirty face. They introduce themselves one by one: Aegle, Erythea, Arethusa, Hestia, Hespera, Hesperusa and Hespereia. The daughters of the evening, but by birth, the great titan Atlas.
Theyâre beautiful too, almost glowing golden under the fading sky. Harry canât know for sure, but he thinks he sees constellations etched across their smooth skin, glinting little stars embedded in their hands and arms and legs.
âHarry Styles,â Aegle finally speaks, and he immediately drops to a kneel, ducking his head in respect. âWe have some gifts for you.â
Harry frowns. âNo tests?â he checks.
He gets giggles in returns. âSilly hero,â Hespera coos. âThe test has already been passed.â She gestured to the trees filled with golden apples. âYou have not eaten an apple.â
A weight lifts from his chest and he sighs. For once his paranoia has worked out in his favor. âThey are said to grant immortality,â he says, unable to help himself. âIf I had eaten itâŠâ
The sisters exchange looks. âIt is better not to dwell on things past,â Hestia says. Out of all her sisters, she is the most known. Goddess of the hearth, of family and warmth. Even just looking at her makes Harryâs heart ache, longing for his mother and the comfort of his home filling his lungs.
âYou have come here to collect gifts from the heavens,â Erythea says softly, âand we will give them to you.â
Exhaling in relief, he clasps his hands together. âThank you.â For once, something comes easily. He stays knelt as Hespera approaches him, placing a hand on his shoulder that coaxes him to look up and meet her kind gaze.
âFirst, a gift from us,â she says. Her hand raises into the air, palm up, and a moment later a cloth bag appears in it. Itâs not a common rucksack, Harry can tell, eyes lingering on the almost translucent white material, threads of something shimmery running through it. âA kibisis,â she says. âNo blade, no flame, nothing can break or tear this bag. It will hold the head of the monster you seek on your return journey, keeping it safe.â
She hands it to him and Harry bows his head again in respect.
âFrom Athena,â Hesperusa says next, taking her sisterâs place. She conjures a polished shield. âTo guard you from the strongest foe. It can only be carried by one with great courage in their soul.â
Harry doesnât hesitate to take it from her, feeling the courage deep in his bones. He is going to survive this journey and he is going to slay the beast. He believes he can and he will.
Arethusa smiles at him, taking Hesperusaâs space. âNext is from Hermes,â she says and Harry blinks in surprise. He didnât expect the god of thievery, luck, trade, travel, and more to willingly assist him, but he supposes they are half-siblings.
Once again, the thought of being so closely related to immortal beings while he himself is so vulnerable makes him grimace. But he turns his attention back to Arethusa as a pair of leather sandals appear in her hands. However, they are not just useless footwear - Harry studies the wings that protrude from the heels, fluttering and twitching as if they are living limbs. âThese will help you soar above any enemy. They will be of great help in reaching the gorgonâs resting place which lies deep within the mountains.â
Harry nods, taking the sandals gingerly. He is already eager to try them on but he tamps it down, looking to Hespereia as she approaches.
âThe last two gifts come from your father,â she says gently, but Harryâs heart stutters. His father. Zeus sent him gifts? As if the shock is painted across his face, she softens. âYoung hero, you know your father watches over you from Olympus.â
âOne hopes,â Harry says quietly, throat dry, âbut one can never know for sure.â
âYou can now,â Aegle says.
Hespereia first conjures an adamantine sword: a harpe. Harry nearly gasps when he sees it, taking in the smooth glowing diamond blade. His hands tremble when the nymph passes it on to him, memorizing the texture and weight of it in his grip.
âThis is⊠most generous,â he says, voice hoarse. His father sent him one of the most powerful weapons that exists. His father is watching over him, essentially blessing his quest.
âIt is not all,â Hespereia reminds, holding out her hand to conjure the final gift. A helmet made of solid obsidian that gleams dark under the fading sun. âThis is also a gift from your fatherâs brother, Hades, and it must be returned after your quest. It is his helm of darkness.â
âHelm of darkness,â Harry echoes, marvelling at the craftsmanship and how the metal feels shockingly cool to the touch. He realizes itâs from the underworld and he shivers at the thought. âWhat does it do?â he asks when the nymph doesnât offer an explanation.
âIt will mask you from the monster,â Hespereia says, dipping her head. âIt pulls the shadows around you until you are hidden from view. It will be of great assist.â
âThank you,â Harry says, before tipping his head back to the heavens to repeat his gratitude to his father and half-siblings. Thank you for believing in me.
I will not let you down.
december word prompt challenge 12/06/20 (meant to be day 5)
snippet; mandalorian au (contains minor spoilers to show; vaguely set between episode 3 + 4 of season 1) - donât need to have seen to read
Itâs not until Harryâs an hour away from Nevarro that he finally allows himself to loosen his grip on the accelerator, the tension in his body draining out and quickly replaced with relief. Itâs hardly an improvement considering that his worry and unease still lingers.
His brothers and sisters are still down there, after all. They came to his defense with valor and bravery, but some of them will pay the price for that act with their blood. Even then, theyâll have to relocate the covert, pack up and move everything all because Harry went against his assignment. The thought grates inside him, prodding at his lungs and temples until he pushes it away.
Swallowing, he glances back at the kid. It seems unbothered by the events that transpired, green ears twitching as it looks around in wide-eyed curiosity. Itâs unharmed and uninjured, but Harry still doesnât know the state of its mental wellbeing or what Dr. Pershing did to it.
Still, he doesnât dwell on it for too long, pulling up a map to chart a course deep into the Outer Rim and far, far away from Nevarro. It hits him then that heâs actually on the run. Heâs a wanted man, the crew of angry bounty hunters he left behind being the least of his worries now that heâs essentially stolen property from the Empire.
All his life, heâs been the hunter. Swift and steady, always alert and aware, always having the upper hand. But for a second down there on Nevarro, he had been the prey, a piece of meat surrounded by a pack of starving wolves. And he had tried to hold his ground, but it had been too much for him. If the others hadnât arrived, he wouldnât be here right now. The realization is grim, and whatâs even more unsettling is that heâs lost his number one source of jobs and money.
The only things he has are the things on his person and whateverâs lingering on his ship, all other belongings back on Nevarro with no hopes of getting to them in the near future. There was no time for preparations or planning things out, and now heâs cruising through the galaxy with no idea where heâs going next.
Harryâs always preferred being alone, but this is something else entirely. His fellow Mandalorians canât help him and he canât go back to the planet he calls his home. He is running from the wolves, and whether he regrets his choices or not, he must now deal with the consequences.
âGot any idea where weâre going, kid?â he asks aloud, glancing back at the creature who tilts its head in confusion. He sighs, figuring heâll get used to the silence eventually.
He doesnât expect the kid to turn and reach for the side panel, pressing down on a button that activates the sensory lights.
Frowning, Harry turns it off from the matching control on his arm panel, but the creature just presses another button, one for another set of lights, before shuffling closer.
âStop touching things,â Harry scolds, turning it off with a huff.
The kid blinks at him, face impassive and expressionless. But then its small hand inches out and presses yet another button, this one for the engine.
Eyes widening, Harry scrambles to deactivate it as the ship jerks, sighing in frustration as he picks the kid up and sets it on his lap so he can prevent it from messing around with the controls.
He pulls up the map again, focusing on a planet lurking far in the outskirts of the rim. âLetâs see... Sorgan... Looks like thereâs no star port, no industrial centers, no population density⊠Real backwater skughole, which means itâs perfect for us.â He glances down at the kid. âYou need to lay low and stretch your legs out for a couple months. How does that sound, you little womp rat?â
It blinks at him, confused.
âNo oneâs going to find us here,â Harry says decidedly, setting the coordinates and doing the calculations so he can put the ship on autopilot. He needs to do an appraisal of his resources, taking stock of what he has and what he doesnât.
He leaves the kid on a seat, belt strapped on so it wonât mess with anything while Harryâs away. Maybe if heâs lucky itâll fall asleep, but heâs not taking any chances.
A quick run through of the cargo hold tells him he doesnât have much food on board, but heâs not too worried since Sorgan is less than four hours away and heâs feeling fine. Heâs reaching for the rungs for the ladder, ready to go back up and check the upper levels, when it happens.
Harry stills, the skin on the back of his neck prickling with awareness as his ears catch it. Â
A sound.
Not a creak or a drone or anything mechanical - an inhale. An inhale from a living creature. Harry doesnât make any sudden movements, fingers curling around the ladder as he waits for another noise. Even though his hearing is unusually precise, thereâs still a possibility he imagined it, still off-centered after the events of the day, but his instincts are telling him heâs not. He keeps his body language relaxed and unguarded, stepping up onto the ladder and beginning to climb really slowly.
Something shifts, and he hears a sigh. A sigh of relief that drifts in from the weapons storage which he hadnât checked on his run-through.
He jumps down from the ladder without making a sound, striding to the storage compartment with quick, silent steps. An intruder, his mind is repeating. Thereâs an intruder on his ship. His hand reaches down for a gun as he peers into the cramped space.
Thereâs not really much room to hide in here so Harry sees him immediately. A boy crouched close to the ground, back pressed to the wall and eyes shut. They flicker open when Harry clicks the safety off the weapon.
Blue eyes, Harry notes. Blue eyes lined with dark, exhausted lines, and now layered in distinct fear. Pink lips pursed into a grimace. Heâs young, Harry realizes. Around his age or a year or two less. Heâs dressed in inconspicuous beige and white clothing that doesnât fit quite right, baggy on his small frame. Heâs also seemingly unarmed, but Harry raises his own gun nonetheless.
Inhaling sharply, the boy holds his hands up in surrender, shrinking away from it. âWait,â he says hurriedly, eyes widening. âDonât shoot. Please donât shoot. I just have a proposition.â
âYouâre on my ship,â Harry says. It comes out more surprised rather than accusing like he intended, mind still catching up with him, reeling from this new development. Thereâs an actual person on his ship. How had he missed this?
The boy shakes his head. âListen, please donât do anything.â He stands up on shaky feet, hands still held out in front of him in a plea. âI needed to escape so I hid away on your ship. I just need passage, alright? Passage to Tatooine.â
Harry stares at him in disbelief. âNo.â
âI can pay you,â the boy says, fumbling for the small leather bag strapped around his middle. âI have money -â
âNo,â Harry repeats, more firm. Heâs angry, angry at himself for slipping up and not noticing sooner. This boy could be anyone - another bounty hunter even. He looks frightened and harmless, all soft edges and delicate features, but Harry knows better than to take appearances to heart. He presses the gun closer to the boy, watching him suck in a breath, face paling. âGive me one reason I should believe youâre not some sort of spy.â
free-form; angel harry, half-angel and half-demon louis
âIn the Bible, there were three spheres of angels,â Harry explains, and Louis rolls his eyes. âThe First Sphere contains the angels that serve as the heavenly servants of God the Son incarnated. Seraphim, Cherubim, and the Thrones, or Elders. To the Jews, that included the Ophanim which were seen in Ezekielâs -â
âIâm sorry,â Louis interrupts loudly, ignoring the irritated look Harry sends him. âWhy is this important?â
Harryâs eye twitches, lips flattening into a line as he stops his pacing. He looks awfully grumpy for who Gabriel said was one of their best goodness mentors, arms crossed over his white shirt and stance stiff. His wings are crisp and pure white - bright enough to make Louisâ eyes burn if he stares too long. Heâs the only angel Louis has seen so far besides the archangels to actually follow the stereotype and dress in all white and the thought makes him smile. âIâm trying to explain the angel hierarchy so you can understand how things work around here.â
âThen why donât you get to the important part instead of babbling on about shit that doesnât matter,â Louis says, arching a brow. âIâm pretty sure I got it anyway. The Order of the Angels are part of the Third Sphere where regular angels report to Seven Archangels as the superiors and the seven report to the Second Sphere and the Second Sphere reports to the First. Really complicated stuff, Iâm blown away.â
âHow do you even know that?â Harry frowns. âMarla said the others barely got to explain anything to you before you chased them off.â
Louis scoffs. âIâm not dumb. I learned the basic stuff about the system ages ago.â
âThe demons taught you about our systems?â Harry frowns, the distaste dripping from his voice undeniable.
âYeah, they do,â Louis says dryly. âHierarchies, habits, hundreds of methods of murdering angelsâŠâ
He said it in hopes of eliciting a reaction, and he gets exactly what he wants. Harry goes rigid, eyes flashing. âDonât joke about things like death and murder,â he says darkly. âNot here.â
âDeath is inevitable,â Louis dismisses. âEven for you and me. The demons taught me that too.â
Harry sighs. âThis would be so much easier if you just listened,â he says flatly.
âWhereâs the fun in that?â Louis asks sweetly, smirking. He swings his legs from where heâs perched in a chair, Harry stood across the room from him.
âIf you listen, you can learn,â Harry insists. âLearn how to be an angel and how to maintain goodness.â
âWell, that sounds boring,â Louis says, feeling satisfaction flicker inside him when Harry has to squeeze his eyes shut in exasperation.
âYou have to listen,â Harry says firmly. âThose are the conditions. You have to try.â
âBut I donât want to,â Louis says, shrugging.
âHow do you know you donât want to when you havenât tried once?â Harry asks. âWhen you havenât even tried to learn about angels and how -â
âI canât be what you and Gabriel and the others want me to be,â Louis interrupts flatly, âand Iâm sure youâll see that for yourself eventually. I canât be an angel or believe in any of the bullshit youâre preaching about me being able to learn something that cannot be taught. Iâm not like you and I never will be.â He lets out a harsh, bitter laugh. âNone of your lessons in goodness will ever change that.â
For emphasis, he stands up and plants his hands on his hips, letting his wings unfold in proof. Harryâs eyes track them, a grimace curling his lips. He doesnât even bother to hide his discomfort and it just makes Louis even more mad.
âThis unnerves you, doesnât it?â he says, blood boiling at the sight. âMy existence unnerves you because it proves everything you know to be true as wrong.â He ruffles his feathers, blood boiling when Harry averts his gaze. âYou canât even look at them.â
Unlike Harryâs pure white feathers, Louisâ wings are a stark shade of slate, lighter than charcoal and darker than ivory. The perfect shade of gray. And itâs really only fitting, he supposes. Heâs the mix of both worlds - half-angel and half-demon. Heâs not good or evil - heâs in between.
And thatâs what drives both angels and demons completely mad.
Neither side knows what to do with him, knows what to do with the boy who crossed the bridge between both kinds that had for so long been unbridgeable and changed the game forever. He is the product of a forbidden match and the source of chaos that neither demons nor angels know how to deal with but seem to think they have a claim over him anyway. He is a source of conflict.
He tracks the movement of Harryâs jaw as he grits his teeth, frustration radiating from his figure. If Louis werenât so pissed at him, heâd find the whole irritated facade attractive. Heâd find Harry attractive. He is objectively handsome, Louis can admit. All angels are to some extent, but Harryâs looks exceed even that bar - all sharp angles and classically beautiful features. Louis would be lying if he said he didnât notice it, or if he said his eyes didnât linger on the angelâs biceps and how nice they look with his arms crossed like that.
But beyond that enticing exterior, Harry is no different than the other angels Louis has met - perhaps, even worse. He doesnât get it, is the thing. He thinks he can teach Louis about goodness and that eventually his wings will turn white and any remnants of his demon DNA will drain out of him like sweat off his skin. That he can just choose a side even though his blood is woven with strings of both.
Thatâs what they all think - what the demons thought too when it was their turn to try and convert Louis. Because that had been the decision made when Louisâ parentage had been confirmed two years ago. Two years with the demons. Two years with the angels. And then, on his twenty-fourth birthday, heâll choose a side.
Louis had been raised on Earth - raised with the humans. He grew up in the system, passed from foster home to foster home until he turned eighteen and was let loose on his own. Thatâs also when his divinity became too strong to conceal. It hadnât even been a week since his birthday when he woke up with a searing pain between his shoulder blades - the exact spot where eventually his wings sprouted, tilting his world on its axis and sending him reeling. He remembers the day like it was yesterday, the memory making him feel almost nauseous.
âIt doesnât matter if I can look at them not,â Harry says shortly, breaking him out of his thoughts. âItâs my responsibility to mentor you - to teach you goodness. And thatâs what Iâm going to do whether you cooperate or not. Because I believe thereâs potential in you: potential that you can learn the way of the light as youâve learned the way of the demons in the last two years. You have a decision to make at the end of all of this, Louis.â
âLike I donât already know,â Louis snaps, annoyed. Harryâs speaking as if he hasnât been reminded of his impending choice every day since he grew his wings and was taken by the divine beings, poked and prodded at by demons and angels alike, studied and talked over like an object on auction. Heâs well aware of what they decided for his destiny - what was decided for him since never once did either side ask his input. He spent his time with the humans being passed from home to home only to end up with the same fate here.
After two long years with the demons and these tumultuous last couple months with the angels, Louis is tired. Heâs tired and heâs weary and heâs angry. He doesnât give a shit about either side - if anything, he thinks heâs better off with the humans. Earth is a mess, he knows, but itâs also completely gray.
Humans are just like him, a mix of good and evil. They exist in the in-between and itâs allowed. Louis has spent his entire life feeling lonely, but at least in the human world, he hadnât actually been alone. He hadnât been the odd one out - he was just one in a sea filled with a million shades of gray.
âYou can argue or fight it all you want,â Harry says slowly, brows dipping in the middle. Louis can see the way he tamps down any feelings of annoyance and frustration, determined to be peaceful and saintly like all other angels. All traces of potential anger that Louis had been thriving on have vanished from his tone along with any hopes on Louisâ side that he could truly get to him. Heâs truly just the same as everyone else - angel or demon alike. âBut youâre here for almost two years before you make your decision. You may think you canât be one or the other, but you can and you will be whether you like it or not. Neither side will allow any other alternative. Itâs my duty to show you our way of life and thatâs what Iâm going to do whether you let me or not. Itâd be much easier, however, if you were cooperative and actually tried to fit in here.â
Louis scoffs. âI canât fit in. In case you missed it the first thousand times, Iâm not an angel.â
âBut you could be,â Harry says easily, fixing him an intense stare. âYou may think itâs impossible because of your blood, but I know you can. And I intend to prove it.â
âWhat makes you think you have any chance?â Louis asks, tone bored. âWhat makes you think you have a chance when the four other angels assigned to teach me couldnât last longer than a week. Itâs only been one day and Iâve gotten to you too, you canât deny it. How much longer will you endure it?â
âIâm a Paragon,â Harry says calmly, still trying to be peaceful even as Louis tries to goad him. âIâve worked my entire life helping humans choose the right path and guiding them to happiness and contentment and Iâve surpassed all other angels in my class. I was blessed with this title along with only nine other individuals, because I represent the supreme ideal of goodness. And on the day I ascended, I made a promise that Iâd do everything in power to help as many people as I can choose good, including you. And you will not be the black mark on my perfect record.â
Louisâ lips curl, fingers clenching the fabric of his white tunic. âYou forget my mother was a Paragon,â he says coldly. When Harry flinches this time, he doesnât feel an ounce of satisfaction. Riling the angel up these past few days might have been entertaining, but it doesnât change the fact that he doesnât and will never understand Louis - will never even try. He tries to keep his tone even as he continues, âShe ascended like you - was just as good and noble as you to be given that title and yet she still ran off with a demon. She fell in love with and then chose to be with a demon, to reproduce with one and create me - an abomination in your eyes and the eyes of everyone else. Would you call that good? Would you call that âperfectâ?â

happy birthday @brickredtoe (i hope you donât mind historical aus dhjkd)
Harry settles in his post to the right of the door, nodding a greeting to the knight heâs replacing before he takes his leave along with the other guard.
He flicks a glance at Liam, his constant patrol partner, whoâs stationed on the other side of the door, staring ahead stonily. Harry likes to think that he takes his duties seriously, even the tedious ones like guarding the princeâs quarters at night, but Liam is on a whole other level.
It took him only a few days to realize that any attempts at conversation would go ignored, the determination to remain completely on guard for the entirety of their shifts blatantly displayed in his solid stance and set expression. Harry finds it rather amusing considering this job has been assigned to them as the newest recruits to the castle garrison and hardly requires such an intense concentration, but he doesnât dare say a word.
Time passes by slowly, but Harry stays silent, ignoring the feeling of his sword weighing down in its sheath and the itch grating at the nape of his neck. Scratching it would disrupt the still atmosphere theyâve created. Not to mention, tolerance and endurance are vital qualities a knight must master, so Harry ignores as best he can and tries to focus on anything else.
His eyes drift to the lanterns hung from the stone walls in intervals down the long corridor, flickering weakly. The pale glow from their candles do little to illuminate the hallway but Harryâs sight has long adapted to the darkness after years of training deep in the night.
Every hour, a patrol of four knights will pass across the corridor at the end of the hall, one of the many precautions taken by the king to ensure the safety of the castle and of the royal family. Harry is feeling the familiar stiffness in his neck and legs when they finally appear, symbolizing one hour completed of their five hour watch.
Itâs also a sign for something else.
The telltale sound of a bolt sliding echoes in his ears and he tenses, biting his lip to suppress a small smile as the door creaks open.
Prince Louis peeks his head out of the door, immediately directing his gaze to Liam. Even so, Harry can see the flush coloring his cheeks and it ignites a familiar warmth inside him, fingers twitching around the hilt of his pollaxe and the urge to reach over and cup Louisâ chin so he can see those glorious blue eyes getting more difficult to resist.
âSir Liam,â Louis murmurs in greeting. Liam breaks his rigid focus to bow to him, always the picture of perfect etiquette.
âYour Royal Highness,â Liam says, voice crisp and coated with respect.
Louis nods to acknowledge him, before finally turning to Harry. He moves slowly, lips quirked up at the side as he drags his gaze over Harryâs face and armor. âSir Harry,â he says, voice soft and fond.
He has to bite his lip this time to tamp away the smile, struggling to maintain his cool. âYour Royal Highness,â he murmurs, but he doesnât bow. Louis doesnât want him to anyway.
They stare at each other for a minute and Harry memorizes the softness in Louisâ sparkling eyes, storing it in a safe of a thousand other glimpses that he can draw strength from in his most trying times. But mostly, he just admires.
The prince snaps out of it first, clearing his throat before saying the same words he always says. âIâm going to bed soon, and Iâd like to request the presence of one of you gentlemen to keep watch until I fall asleep.â
Liam wouldnât dare offer, so Harry proceeds with his usual, âIâd be honored, your highness,â and Louis smiles his usual pleased smile.
Instead of protesting or alerting one of their superiors, Liam just rolls his eyes and stays quiet, letting Harry leave without conflict like heâs been doing for the entire six months theyâve been seeing each other. He hasnât said a word about it to anyone else either, allowing them to keep their secret. Itâs why despite the lack of companionship in their rounds, Harry considers Liam to be someone kind and trustworthy.
The man doesnât even falter when Harry breaks the number one rule thatâs been instilled in him since heâs been knighted, and abandons his post.
He breaks away from the wall as Louis opens the door wider, making enough room for him to slip inside. Then he breaks the second most important rule thatâs been instilled in him: he steps foot inside the princeâs private rooms.
Even though the prince gave him explicit permission to do so, itâs considered consequential. Knights arenât meant to interact with the prince - arenât meant to be the recipient of the princeâs affections either. But Harry cannot find it in himself to feel ashamed.
What he and Louis have, while forbidden, is something tender and honest. It doesnât matter that heâs just a knight and Louis is the heir to the throne - none of it matters because they are in love.
So, he enters the room without hesitation, propping his pollaxe against the wall as Louis gently shuts the door behind him, sliding the bolt back into place. Harry settles his hands on his hip, making him jump before sighing out and slumping back into Harryâs chest. They stand like that for a bit, and Harry inhales the sweet smell of berries in Louisâ soft hair, letting it relax him like it has every day.
It had been difficult abandoning his post the first few times when Louis suggested it, even when he reasoned with himself that it really is true that Louis is much safer in his arms than anywhere else. But half a year past, Harry has forgotten any of his grievances, content to savor every moment he has with the prince because their time is always finite.
One hour. One hour every night and a sprinkling of minutes between Harryâs jousting practice and Louisâ daily garden stroll is all they have, but Harry wouldnât trade it for the world.
Louis eventually breaks away from his hold, humming to himself as he turns and tilts his head up to appraise Harry with a frown. âYou look tired,â he notes.
âYou know itâs rare that I get much sleep,â Harry says. Especially when you arenât laying against my chest, hand pressed to my heart.
Huffing, Louis rolls his eyes. âThey need to stop making you patrol for so long. Youâd think Father would be wise enough to realize that he needs his men well-rested in case of an attack rather than half-dead.â He reaches up and thumbs at Harryâs dark under eyes and Harry catches his hand, sliding it up to circle Louisâ wrist and squeeze before letting go.
âYour father just wants to keep you safe,â Harry says, âand I want that too. If that means I have to stand guard outside your door for five hours every night, Iâm glad to do it.â
âFour,â Louis corrects, âonly four.â
Harry smiles because heâs right. The fifth hour - or rather, the second - belongs to them. Harry remembers when he resented the system in place that meant younger and less-senior knights were given the most brunt work - the monotonous jobs of keeping watch and patrolling. But now heâs grateful for them, because itâs what finally brought him Louis.
Like many knights in the kingdom, Harry spent all seven years of his apprenticeship from fourteen to twenty-one at the castle as a squire, assisting and learning and training. Though it was only when he received his official title as a knight that heâs been honored a place inside its walls, freed from the cramped apprenticeship dwellings far out on the grounds and given a bigger, though still gloomy, room alongside the rest of the garrison and personal guard.
Itâs also the first time he had the pleasure of laying his eyes on the crown prince, but it wouldnât be until he was tasked with the first rotation of guards for Louisâ quarters that Louis would lay his eyes on him in return.
Louis smiles softly at him now, flattening his small hands against the chest plate of his armor. He doesnât have to wear his full set when heâs patrolling but the chest plate and leg plates remain, a layer of chain mail underneath them. He doesnât have to wear his mask either though, which means heâs free to lean down and press his lips to the crown of Louisâ head.
Harry intertwines their fingers when Louisâ hand curls into his, squeezing. âI love you,â Louis whispers then, and Harryâs heart swells with the declaration.
âAnd I love you. My little prince,â he murmurs back, before ducking down to seal the words with a kiss.
Sun filters in through the thick canopy of trees, painting the land with rays of light. With such natural beauty, itâs easy to see why the old King Der Sonne chose the name ChrysĂł DĂĄsos - the Gold Forest. Itâs considered one of the most gorgeous parts of the kingdom and itâs the first time Harryâs seen it in person.
Itâs the first time heâs seen it in person, and the forest itself is the furthest from being on his mind.
The roar of a stallion erupts from the trees behind him, followed by a cacophony of hollers. His devoted followers, he notes amusedly. The chaos sounds distant, but it only spurs him on faster. Adrenaline burns in his blood, dripping through to his veins and his aching muscles. Heâs been chased for days now, and if he didnât despise Liam Payne with every fiber in his being, heâd be impressed by the bastardâs persistence.
Halfway across the kingdom. Thatâs how far heâs been hunted - stalked from the Capital gates through the plains to the heart of Corona here in this very forest. Three days and three nights of close calls, constant alertness, and little rest. Heâs exhausted, weariness settled deep in his bones, but still he runs.
If thereâs one thing Harry knows better than stealing, itâs running. Heâs been running his entire life, and the journeyâs only just begun.
Branches and twigs tear at his clothes as he tears through the barrage of pine trees, heart hammering in his chest and breaths ragged. Time flits by in a stream of green and bark, but he runs and runs.
The sky is streaked pink and yellow by the time the thunder of hooves from Payne and his menâs horses has faded, nothing but his own harsh pants and the rustling of leaves echoing out loud in the silent forest. Harryâs well and truly lost them - itâs almost too good to be true.
He continues to run anyway, survival instincts preventing him from slowing too much. The more distance he puts between himself and those royal violet and gold banners, the better. His satchel slaps against his ribs with every step but he doesnât pause to adjust it, almost grateful for the constant reminder that itâs still there - that what lays inside, swaddled in his softest shirt, is still there and intact.
Itâs the crowning jewel of his escapades, the triumph of the biggest heist Harryâs ever pulled off, and the most valuable item heâs ever been in possession of.
Most importantly, itâs his way out.
Harry finds it almost crazy to think that itâs been less than a month since the plan had gone together. A month since he contacted George and Stud and they got to work carving out a plan. A month of staking out the Royal Museum of Corona, eyeing the lot where the future setup would be unveiled.
A week-long exclusive exhibit, the beer-stained and crumpled newspaper Harry found at Urmaâs Inn had detailed. Thanks to the generosity and kindness of our beloved King and Queen, for a limited time only, the Royal Museum of Corona will be displaying something no Coronian will want to miss.
Itâs the crown worn by the Coronian heir and itâs never left the castle. A wreath of gold inlaid with jewels of amethyst, emeralds, and three Coronian diamonds. And for the first time in centuries, itâs been nearly three decades since it has been placed on a royal head.
Because for the first time in centuries, Corona is without an heir. Not a day goes by that Harryâs reminded of it, forced to endure the topic. Whispers and curses and tears and confusion and panic and anger. Not a day goes by that Harry doesnât hear the same two damned words.
Lost prince.
Not for long, he thinks. Because soon even the Sun Prince will vanish from his mind like a distant memory, just as he vanished from the castle close to nineteen years ago. Because Harry is getting out.
He obviously canât sell the crown here in Corona, but thereâs a world beyond the kingdom waiting to be seen - Saporia, Orciela, Nerova, and beyond. Someone somewhere would gladly pay a hefty sum for so much Coronian gold, and heâll find them eventually. A price large enough that Harry wonât have to run ever again.
This crown is his salvation. His saving grace.
So heâll run for it. Heâll run until his feet are tender and bloody and his lungs are raw and shrunken, because for once in his life, thereâs hope he can finally be in a place where he can finally rest.
Dorian: (voicemail) I've left about four texts... maybe five or six. I lost count. Actually I didn't keep count. I know it's late, two in the morning and all, and I should have waited til tomorrow but who cares right? I'd stop being so annoying if you answered your phone or just sent back a text. Anyway, remember how I told you I was gonna stop being a pussy, like you put it, and talk to that girl in science because having a thing for your identical twin sister is creepy? Well I don't think I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna play it sick tomorrow and just not go to class. That'll give me the weekend I guess. If that's not enough I can, I don't know, fake sick again. How long do you think I can pull that off for? [long pause.....] Wait, are you with Doctor Feelgood? [another pause] I have no idea why I just called him that but I'm not exactly used to calling him Robert like you are. This was fun though, I should leave you voicemails at three in the morning more often. If you're up and just think I'm crazy call me back, I'll be up for a while longer or else text. Or call me in the morning. There's always first period too, unless Ms. Landry's got another stick up her ass and gets in the way. She doesn't understand that our conversations are a lot more interesting than her somewhat badly researched lessons on Mesopotamia. Can you believe she told us Tigris and Euphrates didn't connect? Alright, I'm really ending this now. Call me back, or not. Up to you.
