Alex comes home from the war to find a stranger living in his flat.

Within moments he can feel the taste of bile begin to riseup in his throat, but it’s almost as if he’s paralyzed in position, tryingdesperately to will his body to move but to no avail.

His heart feels like it’s about to hammer out of hischest as he pants, glancing around the room for something, anything before it’stoo late. The last thing he wants to do is wake her, to burden her with yetanother one of his problems while she’s sleeping so soundly for the first timein ages.

But, as his stomach churns and the memories of all those daystrapped on the beach come flooding back, he knows he doesn’t have much time tospare.

“Y/N… Y/N please. Y-Y/N” His voice is so hoarse, it’s almostlike he’s wheezing and he’s truly fearful that it wasn’t enough to catch herattention. Thankfully, soon enough she’s murmuring softly, her eyes fluttering open ashe keeps practically whimpering her name, pressing his tongue to the roof of hismouth between words to keep what’s threatening to come back up at bay.

“Alex? Love, are y’alright?” She sighs, blinking sleepily while her eyes adjust to the darkness cloaking their tiny bedroom. When she feels thebed practically shaking from how hard he’s trembling beside her, she knowswhat’s going on—his night terrors are back.

With surprising ease she springs up from the bed, blindlyfumbling around in the dark as she hears him gulping, gasping for breathdesperately when she finally finds the metal trashbin. Careful not to jostle himtoo much, she climbs back onto the bed beside him. Placing the container in hishands, she gently wraps his arms around it, her hands finding their way to hisback,  rubbing between his shoulders as he buries his face into the wideopening.

He’s quiet for a few seconds before it starts, and withevery retch and soft sob that escapes his lips her heart breaks. “It’s okaylove. You’re alright, you’re here with me, back in Manchester. Far away fromthat place.” She murmurs, fighting back tears of her own as he wails quietlyinto the bin, Y/N just speaking softly to him until finally his body stopsshaking, the sounds of him being ill fading.

When he finally stills, he doesn’t have the strength to tryand face her, so deeply ashamed of once again falling apart. He’s supposed tobe strong for God’s sake yet here he is, three months home, crying in themiddle of the night, waking his fiancé up because he can’t handle a simple baddream.

“ ‘m so, ‘m so sorry pet I just couldn’t. I can’t move.” Hewhimpers, clutching the trashbin with white knuckles. “S’bloody patheticy’deserve better.” His voice is almost dripping with bitterness and loathing. He pulls off his shirt suddenly, wiping at his mouth as he sniffles, stillunable to look at her.

Without a word, she moves away from him, and at first he’sscared she’s finally hit her wits end. She pads into the bathroom, the soundof cabinets opening and closing filling their otherwise silent flat before shereturns, flicking the light off as she comes back in.

Carefully she pries the bin out of his hands, leaving it bythe bathroom door to take care of later before sitting on the edge of the bedbeside him. “Al, it’s okay. Love I don’t mind at all.” She whispers gentlydabbing at his pale face with the damp flannel, the cool water that’s soakedthe material calming to his clammy skin. “Love you with all my heart I do, andI’m so thankful you’re back here with me.”

“But I’m pathetic, can’t even handle the bloody war withoutfalling apart when hardly anythin’ happened t’me” He says bitterly, still toofull of shame to meet her eyes. That is until she gently tilts his chin up,forcing his eyes to meet hers.

“You listen to be Alex. You were out there, stranded and yousurvived. There is nothing cowardly or pathetic about it. I love you, and I’mproud of you every single day, and this… whatever that’s in your brain tryingto make you think otherwise is wrong. Alright?” Her voice while soft has anunwavering certainty that he’s slightly surprised to hear.

“I know it’s not easy, and I know you have flashbacks likewhat happened tonight. But none of that, nothing like that will ever make meleave your side. I’m here with you always, just like I was with you on thatbeach.” She murmurs, gently tapping the necklace against his chest.

“Now, why don’t we get y’all cleaned up, I’ll make us someof that peppermint tea and if you want we can try sleeping again in a bit. Doesthat sound okay?” She gently brushes his hair back from his forehead as helooks up at her, worrying his lip for a second before nodding.
