I’ve got a lot of wanting!  

He sighed and raked a hand through his hair.  “There were no guards at your entryway.  I wanted to ensure no one was waiting here to kill you.” 

“And if someone had been here?”  She crossed her arms tightly.  “They would have killed you instead?”

And a “thought” in the same scene:

“Why are you the only sentry in this hall?” he asked slowly, patiently.  

The guard spared a quick glance to Cullen, then thought better of it, and stared straight ahead.  “I do not know, sir.”
