Congratulations to our first place duck, the Wood Duck!!!
It was an incredibly close poll, but with 51.7% of the vote in the final round, the Wood Duck has won the North American Duck Poll!
I run the @north-american-duck-poll as a side blog and I try very hard to resist revealing what my favourite species are on that blog so as not to affect the vote. That being said, I am writing my fun facts for the baby duck poll tournament right now and I will say, sometimes you can tell. For any of you who follow the duck poll, if you see a fun fact that seems unusually enthusiastic or poetic, just know I was probably on the verge of tears while writing it because I love these birds so much.

The Wood Duck is well known for its striking and unique appearance. Males have an iridescent green head with a crest while females have a greyish brown head with a white eye ring. Wood ducks nest in tree cavities and have sharp claws that allow them to perch on branches.
The King Eider, like other eider species, is a northern sea duck that is primarily found along the coast of the Arctic Ocean, as well as the cold northern waters of the Pacific and the Atlantic. The male is patterned in black, white, blue, green, and orange, while the female is mottled brown with subtle chevron patterns along the sides.
Welcome one and all to the North American Duck (and Goose and Swan) Poll! The first round of polls will go up March 7th at 10 am PST.
Firstly, I want to give a huge shoutout to @goverment-agency-bracket for creating such an easy to follow bracket for their own polls and emphasizing the importance of properly seeding one’s brackets. I was heavily inspired by the way they set their brackets up, and I have taken great care to seed these brackets in the way I thought best.
Below are brackets A and B. The winner of bracket A will face the winner of bracket B in the final.
In order to allow time for people to notice the polls, the first round will be open for a week, while all following rounds will only be open for a day each.
The 48 species of waterfowl in this tournament represent all native North American species in the order Anseriformes, as given in the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America. For information on seeding, please refer to this post which explains my methodology and gives the seed position of every species.

Harlequin Duck
The King Eider, like other eider species, is a northern sea duck that is primarily found along the coast of the Arctic Ocean, as well as the cold northern waters of the Pacific and the Atlantic. The male is patterned in black, white, blue, green, and orange, while the female is mottled brown with subtle chevron patterns along the sides.
The Harlequin Duck is found along rocky coasts in Canada, the northern United States, and Greenland. On top of the male's distinctive patterning, both sexes can be identified by the white spots present on both sides of the head, towards the back. The male makes a high-pitched squeaking call, and is therefore sometimes referred to as a "sea mouse".
