"I think you might be pregnant.â
Elena squawked and dropped her cup of tea, which promptly smashed on the kitchen floor. She managed to avoid the hot liquid from scalding her feet, but only just. âGwaine! Whatever gave you that impression?â
âIâm not sure,â said Gwaine, who was leaning against the kitchen doorframe, studying her with a furrowed brow. âThereâs just something different about you. Itâs like youâve got this...this glow, or something.â
Elena raised her eyebrow at him, unconvinced.
âAnd youâve been feeling ill the past week,â Gwaine said. âDonât tell me you havenât; I saw you sneaking out of bed to throw up in the mornings.â
âThat might just be the stomach bug thatâs going round,â said Elena. âGwenâs sick, remember?â
âAnd,â Gwaine added, âyouâve been eating really strange combinations of food.â His eyes passed over the plate of freshly made bacon and peanut butter on toast that Elena had set on the counter.
Perhaps he had a point after all. âIâll go and get a pregnancy test when I head out later today,â said Elena.
âRight,â said Gwaine. âHere, Iâll clean up the floor for you.â He walked in, grabbed a kitchen cloth, and went on his hands and knees.
Elena stopped for a moment to admire her husbandâs glorious arse before she remembered what they were originally talking about. âI seriously doubt it, though,â she continued. "I mean, weâve been using protection, havenât we?â
Elena looked down at him and saw a telling expression on Gwaineâs face that meant he was about to say something he thought she wouldnât like. âHavenât we?â she asked again.
âOut with it, Gwaine.â
Gwaine sighed. âRemember when we got fantastically drunk after Merlin and Arthurâs bachelor party?â He finished mopping up the floor and got a brush and pan to gather the pieces of Elenaâs shattered mug. âIâm not exactly sure what happened after that.â
Hazy images of the two of them falling into bed and frantically snogging began to surface. Elena felt her eyes widen. âOh, shit.â
Elena stared at the pregnancy test. Two red lines stared back.
âSo?â Gwaine called from outside, rapping on the bathroom door. âWhat does it say?â
âIt says - â Elena began to hyperventilate, and the pregnancy test dropped from her shaking fingers. She leaned forward on the toilet seat and put her head in her hands.
âElena?â More knocking. âElena, love, let me in, youâre getting me very worked up out here - â
âIâm pregnant!â she shouted.
There was a silence. Then Gwaine said, very shakily, âFuck.â
âI know.â Collecting herself, she got up and went to the door, unlocking it to let her husband in. Gwaine half-stumbled into the bathroom, his brown eyes wide.
âWeâre going to be parents,â said Gwaine in an uncharacteristically small voice.Â
Elena nodded. âDo you think weâre ready?â When Gwaine didnât say anything, she took him by the hand. âHey, I could get rid of it if you - â
âNo, donât!â Gwaine said suddenly. He squeezed her hand. âI want us to keep it.â
Elena looked at him, then looked down to where his hand was at her abdomen.
âWeâve been married for nearly a year now, after all,â Gwaine continued, and, inexplicably, he began to smile. âI think itâs about time.â
âWould we even be good parents?â Elena asked, her hand joining Gwaineâs to rub just below her stomach.
âMy mother told me once that only good parents worry about whether theyâre good parents,â Gwaine replied. âI think weâll do just fine.â
