The end came like a thief, like a voice in the night. We weren't prepared and we sure as hell weren't ready.
There were signs everywhere... LITERAL SIGNS.
THE END IS NEAR. HE IS COMING.
I used to laugh at those signs Now I just found them terrifying.
People disappeared People we knew They disappeared like a thief in the night and in the morning they were gone
Then the constant earthquakes wild fires floods There was an F5 Tornado up in Bangor, Maine and that never happens. Ever.
The world had gone to hell and we were left to pick up the pieces.
I seriously wrote a professional post about AR and VR being needlessly cruel and gory in science fiction setting a precedent for real science to think that's the only way to go when experimenting with human augmentation.
We live in a situation where we have all the tech and pieces to develop things like this as painlessly as possible through simulations and focus on retaining the whole human body in good shape.
So humanity need not take some dystopian, extreme path resulting in the dehumanizing of human subjects or extracting brains and spinal cords. We are beyond that ugly, crude Robocop Van Der Hoovian future. We can do it right.
I wrote a review of The Ones Weâre Meant to Find by Joan He. Click the link above. Hereâs an excerpt:Â
The concept of this novel was very interesting. It combines discussions of climate change effects, society and technology, and artificial intelligence. It reminded me of The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez, a sci-fi novel about extraterrestrial human societies and escaping the impacts of climate change ( yâall should absolutely read it). It also really reminded me of Westworld, the HBO show. Iâve read some othersâ reviews where people said it reminded them of Black Mirror.
Be sure to check out the novel when its released on May 4!
Sanity is a valuable possession; I hoard it the way people once hoarded money. I save it, so I will have enough, when the time comes.

Hunter had one job: open the gateway between worlds to keep his realm alive. He hadnât counted on betrayal. He hadnât counted on being saved by a human girl. And heâd never guessed he couldnât trust his own king. Now heâs trapped in a world to which he can never truly belong.
Separated by realms, Mackenzie and Hunter must save the otherâs world. But the divide isnât the only thing working against them. Beasts and men fight a dangerous battle that pits Hunter and Mackenzie against those theyâre trying to protect.

EXCERPT
She hadnât told them about, Hunter, who had brought them to safety before heâd opened the gate. She hadnât told them about how heâd saved Hannah and the others, how heâd gotten countless men to run and hide and stay safely out of the way. The creature had brought them here, behind the shelter of this reinforced glass, his eyes glowing with a light so blue that each of them could see it was unnatural, and theyâd been so terrified theyâd followed him anyway. No one had included it in their report. Hannah didnât know if it was because the creature had saved them, or if it was the stories theyâd heard about exposed humans being quarantined and tested, orâmore troublingâif that strange draw the creature had seemed to have over Riley and his sister had affected the rest of them too.
âThe beasts descended first,â she said. âWinged, flying things, with horns and fur and those big⌠horrible claws.â That had been the worst. The claws they had used after the Breach to claim the lives they would be taking. They had been Marked, infected with some sort of toxin through the wound that the military could not identify or remove. No one had known what the Marked were meant for, until the Resurgence. âThe monsters came through, and then there was the chaos, like a six-tailed tornado. I saw a tank lifted from the ground like it was nothing, tossed into the air. It just disappeared. A supply truck smashed into the temporary command center, flattening six shelters at once. Thatâs when the gunfire started.â

What Mackenzie doesn't know is that this stranger isn't the helpless boy he appears to be. He's one of the monsters. And he's got plans of his own. Thrown into a dying city in another realm, Mackenzie is powerless to get back. With the gateway closing, time is not on her side. But the stranger is, and if they can escape execution, this girl and her monster might be able to save both their worlds.
