Hi! Isopod asker again! Do you have experience with drier bioactive setups? I'm trying to find a dry substrate/mix for my hognose that will support a clean up crew (probably isopod of some kind, haven't decided species yet), and not be too dusty. I'll have moist retreats for the insects, but for the most part it'll be dry. I'm so sorry for asking so many questions, I appreciate it! I do have experience with drier bioactives; I’ve been practicing with my bioactive roach cultures that prefer it drier. However, I haven’t done a reptile in one yet; I’m waiting for my AP enclosure to get here so that I can set up my leo’s.Â
If you want to mix your own substrate, a good starting point for a drier to arid bioactive enclosure is 50% topsoil, 25% sand, 25% decomposed granite. It may need to be tweaked depending on the individual ingredients, as they can vary from one product to the next (especially topsoil).Â
If you want to go the easy route and purchase your substrate, The BioDude has a pre-mixed substrate called Terra Sahara which is appropriate for hognoses, and even has a whole hognose kit you can buy that includes the substrate, leaf litter, plants, and clean up crew.
