well let’s see! i’d say that halfpromise/laura (idk if she still has a tumblr i can’t find it?) who wrote ‘those who stand for nothing fall for anything’ was the person who made me think that there was still hope for writing death note fic in the year 2013. it was a pretty dead fandom but her work was/is just so brilliant and really inspired me as far as actual prose quality + atmosphere

as for content: i actually made a post earlier in the week mentioning how i re-read ‘a tithe to hell’ by aja (aka the best canon-compliant dn fic hands down accept no substitutes) and realized it gave me ALL MY LXLIGHT SEX DYNAMIC FEELINGS/HEADCANONS. i’m here for violent obsessive megalomaniacal top!light and emotionally/monetarily/legally in control bottom!L

and now, embarrassingly, let me wax about the FIC THAT CHANGED MY LIFE. when i was like 16 or 17 i was madly obsessed with the redeemer series by cocaocoveredgods. don’t get me wrong it wasn’t well written (the prose is mediocre fanfic prose), it’s full of really really sketchy dynamics (abuse, non-con wall to wall, WILDLY UNREALISTIC FANFIC SEX, hyper-sexualization in general, etc.) but this was before the ~teens 4 moral purity~ revolution or whatever that’s going on in fandom nowadays and let me tell you when i was an underage teen all i really wanted was to read campy porn about hot anime dudes Beating the Shit Out of Each Other.

the reason i say it changed my life is because it was my first introduction to beyond birthday. i mean, i knew vaguely of the character from the fandom but i thought he was this lame emo dark!L (spoiler alert: he is), and i had no interest in reading la:bb or any fic about him. but he features in a major plotline in the second ~book~ or whatever of the redeemer series (which was called ‘2 B or not 2 B’ i mean seriously. your faves? could never.) and the characterization of him is like so frighteningly, campily lovable. like he’s this truly awful half-shinigami fuck who wants to drive L pretty much insane so they can Be Together 5ever but he’s also always wearing women’s fetish outfits and bdsm topping everybody in a way that is rarely safe, sane, or consensual and i just? fell in love with the character. it’s where most of my B characterization comes from although i’ve turned it down several notches. redeemer!B is the origin of my B tho & i will always love him

oh that’s kind of hard bc i feel like i never write real alternate universe fic? i pretty much write semi-canon-compliant aus that branch off into ~new universes~ i guess afterlife!aus kind of count. i’ve written several of those. and B!lives aus. shinigami realm shit? i like anything that explores the supernatural side of death note because it gets so shafted by dull police procedural stuff tbh

aw. <3 the most useful, and the only, writing advice i can give (bc i’m someone who hates hearing writing advice & needs to figure everything out on their own) is: writer’s block is fake. don’t wait for inspiration. if you want to write, just write. if you don’t want to write, write anyway. write every day. write even when it’s like pulling teeth. write until it’s a habit and if you go two days without it you start to feel twitchy. there’s a quote that no one can agree on the source of but which my dad (also a writer) used to tell me when i was a kid which is some writer, when asked if they only write when they’re inspired, who responded: “yes. fortunately, i just so happen to be inspired at nine o’clock every morning.”

Amazing builds! Personally I found Aether to be the absolute best special on Grima (I’ve built him to death lol) for enemy phase, as he tanks a hit, hits back, tanks another, and kills w the fourth w Aether. And generally he can destroy ppl with just one hit so the Aether can be used every other enemy for healing, greatly ups sustain.

And like the above, I think Heavy Blade isn’t the best SS for Tiki. I’d suggest smth like Close Defense, or give Drive Atk to her instead and give Grima Armored Boots or Obstruct instead. If you go wih the former, then Myrrh can go for smth like Close Defense instead.

Also, the Fortress Def on Myrrh is a good move, but it’s kind of an old skill that’s been mowed over by powercreep. Something like Atk/Def bond (Fjorm) or Brazen Atk/Def (W Chrom/Ares) if you can afford it would be an A with no repercussions and double the force.

Likewise, Atk/Spd Bond (LA Lyn, Bridal Tharja, WP Hinoka) or Brazen Atk/Spd (W Robin, Linus) would do much better than Life and Death on Tiki. In fact, I may even suggest Brazen Def/Res (M Kana) instead, bc Tiki needs to be able to take a hit w her low speed and can retaliate with a def/res special or something from the Luna line.

(Also the Odd Atk Wave… Idk, it’s kind of a weird move considering that Myrrh already has Hone Dragons? And the buff will only be on Tiki if you do Square instead of Pyramid turn formations. But it’s an expensive inherited skill so I’d feel bad if I picked it apart too much lol. Instead maybe consider Goad Dragons on Myrrh, or maybe even smth like Res Smoke if you can afford it.)

Thank you for the suggestions! I have Aether on Grima’s daughter, my F!Kana with lightning breath, and it deals well with her. I think it would be good on him, I haven’t really updated in in a while though, so it would probably do good on him, although with his defense I have found that Ignus has done wonders with the giant boost in damage when it goes off

For the A skills, Myrrh I’ve had since she first was released, so there has been quite a few upgrades since then. Unfortunately, all the Brazen ones tend to be on units I don’t have, or have only one copy of, so i haven’t been able to give them up. Tiki doesn’t really need the defense boost, the thing i have found with Life and Death is that with everything on her, and in the greater range of being within 2 squares of someone, the only negative she has is -5 res. With her unique weapon refined, it counters the defense loss of Life and Death, and I have somewhere between +10 - +16 Atk ontop of her base. I also had a LaD lying around, which made it useful. I find she doesn’t need to take too many hits, since she heals 10 - 20 hit points almost every turn, and Ninian and Myrrh are able to allow her to get out of trouble with Guidance and Dancing. That being said, 27 def and res after Life and Death is still decent. Better Res than Grima! And she rarely gets doubled unless i misplace her.

For Myrrh, i might change her A skill, but I like the fact that fortress doesn’t require anything to be active, and it fits her thematically, since she is a literal flying fortress. 

As for my defense of using odd wave atk, I had a spare lying around, and both her and Myrrh need to be next to someone to have their ability activate, so it allows me to pincer attack or divert the computer’s attention 2 ways and still get the bonuses. It helps with Tempest trials when time is of the essence, and other scenarios. I also have both Kana’s built up, and a Nowi i need to work on, so it helps being able to swap these types of things in and out. (For my Kana’s, please see This Post)
