(the title is a Hamilton reference **surprise surprise** from the song âItâs Quiet Uptown - âgoing through the unimaginableâ)
Intro: I am going to preface this fic by saying I am so sorry. Â Like holy moly. Â I honestly have no idea where this came from but I guess I was in an angsty mood and this just put itself together in my brain. Â
This is for the ever-so-lovely @trekken81âs Ed Sheeran Challenge and I chose the song Dive.
I didnât know the song before writing this fic, and honestly struggled for a while with it.  But then I thought of one of the drabbles that I wrote for 400 followers, and it really connected with this song.  It is The One Where Leonard Drowns - you can see already where the angst is coming from.  Feel free to read that one first, as it may give you some context into the âmemoriesâ that are dispersed through the story, but you should be able to read this without reading the drabble.Â
Pairing: Bones x reader
Word Count: 1,700
Warnings: Heavy on the angst. Â Small amounts of fluff but it only makes the angst hurt more. Â Sorry. Â Brief description of CPR. Â A lot of sadness. Â
ALSO: The formatting for this one is pretty weird. Â It makes sense in my brain but thatâs probably because I wrote it lol. Â So if it doesnât make sense Iâm sorry. The italicized words are memories, the non-italicized words are current events, and the lyrics for the song are italicized and indented. Â
-Enjoy!-
âTell me what to do! Â I need you to tell me what to do!â
His ribs crunched beneath your hands as you pounded on his chest.Â
âI need you, Leonard.â
You dug the heel of your palm into your eyes, trying to dispel the images.Â
The feeling of his lips, strikingly cold, unnaturally cold against yours as you forced air into his lungs.
Gasping, tears stinging your eyes, you scrubbed at your lips with your hand until they were numb.Â
A knock.
The snap of a twig, the aliens approaching, and you curled over his un-moving body protectively.Â
You looked through watery eyes to see a silhouette at your door.Â
The form was leaning against the frame, and it struck another memory into your brain.Â
Maybe I came on too strong
Maybe I waited too long
Maybe I played my cards wrong
Oh just a little bit wrong
Baby I apologize for itÂ
âIs this seat taken?âÂ
Hazel eyes glided into your view, framed by a tan face, dark hair, and a gentle smile.Â
âYes, actually, itâs reserved for my feet.â You smirked up at him and stuck your feet up onto the chair.Â
âAnd why arenât those feet out on the dance floor? Â Especially since they are connected to a beautiful young woman such as yourself.â A handsome smile curled at his lips.
You rolled your eyes and huff, but you couldnât hide a grin, âAre you asking me to dance...â
âLeonard. Â Leonard McCoy.â
Another knock, and a soft voice, indecipherable behind the closed door.Â
âYouâre an asshat, Leonard McCoy.â
Footsteps were following close behind you,âWait, Y/N, I can explain. Just stop.â
You didnât.Â
âI always meet douchy guys at that bar, I thought I was wrong for once. Â Guess the streak continues.â
You fumbled with your keys, frustrated with your shaking hands.Â
âCome on, darlinâ. Â Let me explain.â He appeared at your side, taking your keys and deftly unlocking the door in one controlled movement.Â
âNo.â You stepped into the room, blocking Leonard from entering, âAnd donât call me âdarlinââ.â
You slammed the door in his face.Â
Stepping in, you threw your bag against the wall and pressed your hands to your forehead before dragging your fingers through your hair and letting a few tears fall. Â Looking back towards the door, you saw his silhouette just outside the translucent glass, leaning up against the door frame, as if he was pressing his forehead against the door.Â
âHey, Y/N? Â Iâm sorry. Â Listen, I really am. Â Y/N?â
Another knock woke you from your memory.Â
âY/N? Are you in there?â An voice just outside the door.Â
Your tongue was thick in your mouth, your limbs heavy, and you couldnât bring yourself to move from your fetal position on the bed.Â
I could fall or I could fly
Here in your aeroplane
I could live, I could die
Hanging on the words you say
I've been known to give my all
And jumping in harder than
10,000 rocks on the lake
âY/N?â The swishing of the door.Â
A splash. Â You didnât realize at the time but every moment after that sound would be the worst moments of your life.Â
You twisted in the sheets, your legs getting tangled and you felt like you were trapped.Â
You were dragged under again. Â No air. Â You struggled against the dead weight that you had your arms wrapped around and you barely managed to breach the surface. Â Air.Â
Your toes finally found purchase on the sheets and you were able to kick them off. Â Air.Â
Through your kicking and thrashing you somehow managed to move to where your tip toes touches the sand below the freezing water. Â You couldn't let go of the weight that dragged you backwards. Â You couldn't let go.Â
A hand on your shoulder, a face hovering over you.
"Hey, did you hide my socks?" A warm breath tickled your hair and you peeled your eyes open.Â
"What?" The words slid out of your sleepy lips.Â
"My socks." Leonard's face was inches from yours, his body hovered over yours, "You know, the yellow-striped ones, I can't find them."Â
"Ohhhh." You sighed, turning over under the blankets, pulling it up under your chin as you settled back into the bed, your eyes falling shut again, "Havn' seen 'em."
"I need them, darlin', my shift starts in 5 minutes." Leonard carded his hands through your hair and pulled at the blankets.Â
"Nooo." You groaned, sliding deeper, away from his caressing hands, "Iz not my fault you need your stupid lucky socks."
"They're not stupid, and I have a really important surgery today so just tell me where they are. Â I know you know." He revealed your head from under the blankets and started nuzzling around your face, his voice vibrating off your skin, making you giggle.Â
"I don't know, you weirdo." You leaned into the soft kisses he was pressing against your neck, sinking your fingers into his hair.Â
"You're lying." A kiss to your lips.Â
"And how would you know that?"Â
"Because, darlin', I know every inch of you, I can tell when you're lying." His hands slid under the blankets now, dancing his fingers down your arms, and you jumped at the coolness of his fingers against your skin.Â
"If-if you know everything inch of me, how could you miss...THIS?!" You teased, tugging down the blankets in one swoop and revealing your body, and your yellow-striped-sock-covered-feet.
"You..." Leonard teased, growling before nearly attacking you with a kiss, setting fire to your skin.Â
And before you could stop him he was pulling at the socks on your feet, and you were sent into a fit of giggles. Â You screeched as his hands roughly slid up your legs, having freed your feet from the socks, and reached your upper body, pinning your wrists to the bed. Â
"You are so going to pay for that, darlin'."
âLass? Â Lass? Â Y/N?â A hand smoothing down your spine.Â
You struck out, connecting with something soft and hearing a quiet âoofâ.Â
Springing your eyes open, you saw Scotty, a hand pressed to his arm.Â
âScotty?â Your voice scratched at your throat.Â
âAye.â He rubbed his arm.
âDid I hit you?â You sat up on your elbows a bit.Â
âNo worries, lassie.â
Moving to the edge of the bed, you touched your toes to the ground, focusing on the feeling of the steady floor beneath your feet. Â You werenât drowning. Â You were okay.Â
Then, a voice. Â You werenât sure if it was Scottyâs or your own.Â
âItâs time.âÂ
His name was the last thing on your lips before the world went black.
âLeonard.â
You met Scottyâs sad gaze.Â
The force it took to tilt your head into a nod was unimaginable.Â
So don't call me baby
Unless you mean it
Don't tell me you need me
If you don't believe it
So let me know the truth
Before I dive right into you
"Don't say that."
"Say what?"Â
"That you love me."
"Why not?"
"Because of your face."
"My face?"
"You look so serious."
"So?"
"It means you mean it."
"I do mean it."
"Well that's not good."
"Why not?"
"Because I love you, too."
Every step next to Scotty was excruciating. Â His hand on your lower back was basically the only thing keeping you upright.Â
Then, the room, too white, always too white, too clean, too familiar. Â A figure in the bed, too silent, too peaceful, too still, too familiar. Â Â Â
A shiver went down your spine, the cool wind rustling the treetops stung your soaked skin. Â A gray form was splayed out on the beach.
âLeonard.â
You fell next to him, somehow making it onto a chair, somehow not falling to your knees as you took his hand, as his fingers didnât close around yours.
You leaned in, resting your head on Leonardâs chest, praying to hear anything, any sign of life.
His breathing was even and steady, his heart was beating, not as strong as the the day before, or the day before that, or the day before that. Â
Your heart was beating, not as strong as the day before, or the day before that, or the day before that. Â You wondered if itâd stop today.
âYou stupid idiot. Â Why did you have to make me love you?â You spoke to an empty room, to empty ears.Â
âBecause this would be a hell of a lot easier if I didnât love you.â Tears created crevices on your cheeks.Â
âBut I do.â You smiled.Â
âSee my face? This is my serious face.â
You leaned in close, touching your nose to his.Â
âTell me what to do! Â I need you to tell me what to do!â
A kiss to his unconscious lips.Â
âI need you, Leonard.â
A knock. Â
A twig snapping.
A sympathetic gaze.Â
Dark forms appear deep in the forest.Â
Panic. Â This was not happening again.Â
Fear flashed over your skin and you ran your fingers over his chest, pressing down as hard as you could, trying to get blood moving, is that what you're supposed to do?
"Wake up! Â Please wake up!" Hot tears dripping down your cheeks.Â
âWake up, Leonard. Â I need you.â
A buzzing made you lift your head and you realized that the doctor was talking to you, explaining what was going to happen. Â It was like it was another language. Â
Monitors were being shut off, wires disconnected, a curtain pulled back. Â You were drowning.Â
You curled closer to him as a dark form loomed over you.Â
âPlease, Leonard, come back to me.â
Then, he wasnât connected to anything anymore. Â He looked like him. Â Like he was sleeping Â
And then you were alone.Â
Beep. Â Beep. Â A heartbeat.Â
I could fall or I could fly
Here in your aeroplane
"I don't deserve a second chance, I know."
"That's the problem. Â You do."
Beep. Â Beep.Â
I could live, I could die
Hanging on the words you say
"You have bewitched me, body and soul..."
"That's from Pride and Prejudice."
"Doesn't make it any less true."
Beep. Â Beep.Â
I've been known to give my all
And lie awake, every day
"You did all this? Â For me?"
"Oh, darlin', have you not been paying attention at all?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Anything."
"What-?"
"I would do anything for you."
Don't know how much I can take
"Come back to me."
Beep.Â

Intro: So I wrote this little (not so little) piece for @outside-the-governmentâs Winter Blues Challenge (tbh I kinda forgot about it until you sent the reminder and I freaked out because I couldnât figure out a story, but I think I got it!)
The prompt was: âI thought that was eradicated years ago!â I kinda changed it to âThat was eradicated years ago!â Because reader and Bones are in medical field so I would assume they would know if something has been eradicated or not.Â
Pairing: Bones x reader
Word Count:Â 2578
Summary: Reader is a nurse who is presented with a pretty tricky case. Â The nurse enlists Dr. McCoyâs help to figure it out, and eventually does. Â Is Bones developing feelings for the reader? Â Maybe? Â
Also: I had my respiratory infection lecture notes open for this one so all that information is accurate, but I kinda took a few liberties in the sense that I made up that the medical equipment wouldnât test for this disease so be gentle.Â
-Enjoy!-
You owed your date on Friday night to a 6 month old baby with a cough. Â
"One more minute, little one." You cooed, smiling down at the child as you ran the dermal regenerator over her wound. Â
The Enterprise had received a distress signal from a nearby planet, the signal coming from a small colony that were being attacked by Klingons. The rescue was not as successful as it could have been, losing about half of the colony before you were able to stop the Klingons. Â You were assigned to one of the children that had been rescued, a 6-month old that had been orphaned during the attack and had a upper arm laceration that you were quickly healing with the dermal regenerator.
She squirmed under your grasp and began to cough. Â You noticed the cough as soon as she had arrived, but thought the laceration to her arm was a more pressing concern. Â
"Oooo, that's a pretty nasty cough you have there. Â Let's see if we can't get you some antitussive medication, huh?" You babbled as you finished up with the dermal regenerator and moved to set up the medication to run through the IV that you had already inserted in her tiny arm.Â
"Everything alright in here?" A deep voice sounded from the doorway and you didn't even need to look up to tell that it was your boss and the CMO, Dr. Leonard McCoy. Â
"Yep. Just finished up with the laceration, then moving on to figure out what this cough is!" You sang the last few words down at the baby, tickling her little belly with your gloved fingers as you did.Â
You heard Leonard chuckle low and soft behind you, "Alright, well let me know if you need anything."
"I will, Dr. McCoy." You waved him off and heard his footsteps retreat as you focused your attention to the screen on the side of the biobed. Â
At the end of your shift you still hadn't figured out what was wrong with the baby. Â
"Hey, Y/N, I'm here to take over." Your fellow nurse called from outside the room.Â
You were confounded. Â You had run all the tests you could, cleaned up the infant, and soothed her to sleep in your arms. Â And still you couldn't figure out the cause for her cough. Â
"Umm... You know what, I think I'm going to stay a few extra hours, try to figure out what's going on with this little one.  I think they have their hands full down the hall with one of the inhabitants that came in with a leg amputation and suddenly his appendix burst.  Widespread infection." You explained, your eyes not leaving the little pink bundle on the bed.Â
"Sure, whatever." The nurse said and disappeared down the hall without a second glance. Â
You leaned your elbows onto the bed, drawing close to the infant, examining her chubby cheeks and pouty lips. Â
"I'm going to figure this out, little one, I promise." You whispered.Â
The baby stayed sound asleep.Â
A soft shake on your shoulder roused you from your fitful dream. Â You lifted your head, a drip of drool sliding down your chin as you squinted up to see who woke you. Â A dark-haired, blue-shirted form hovered over you, who you quickly recognized as Dr. McCoy. Â
"Mornin', sunshine." His deep voice made you smile. Â
"Morning?" Surprise rushed through you and you glanced at your watch. Â
You had no idea how long you worked before you fell asleep, but now it was only 2 hours away from your next shift. Â A small cough honed your focus and you turned instantly to the infant in the bed. Â You stood abruptly, pushing past Leonard and moving to the screen on the biobed, eyes quickly scanning the readings. Â
"Hmmm..." You hummed in discontent, her vitals not as good as you expected considering the medication that you had given yesterday.Â
"Not to stop you from doing your job or anything, Y/N, but it is almost time for shift change, and you need to go get some sleep." Leonard's voice sounded from beside you, and you jumped, almost having forgotten he was there.Â
"Oh, Dr. McCoy, I'm fine!" You rubbed the sleep out of your eyes.Â
He chuckled lowly, "The bags under your eyes beg to differ, darlin', and I can't allow you to work 3 shifts in a row. Â I'll watch her until the next nurse comes in, you go get some sleep."
You sighed, looking towards the small bundle that was still sound asleep on the bed before bringing your eyes to Leonard's kind hazel ones.Â
"Alright." You conceded, tapping a few more things on the screen before getting ready to leave, "Make sure you tell the next nurse that her oxygen has been hovering around 94-95% and to call me if it gets any lower.  Her fever is stable now, but has been spiking all night."Â
You stepped out the door before you remembered another point and you stuck your head back in the room, "Oh and she likes it when you cradle her and sing âtwinkle-twinkle little starâ."
Leonard turned to give you an amused look, "I think I can handle it. Â Now go."
You frowned at the dismissal but scurried off back to your quarters, throwing yourself onto your bed and finding sleep quickly.Â
You worked two shifts in a row again, and the baby's cough still didn't subside.Â
"Damnit!" You cried in frustration, another test coming back negative.Â
Leonard's head instantly appeared in the door, as if he had been waiting there.Â
"Y'alright, Y/N?" His voice was full of amusement at your disheveled appearance.Â
"No. Â I am not." You stormed, turning the screen for him to see, "Everything's coming back negative. Â Cultures, scans, examinations, EVERYTHING."Â
You pulled at your hair in frustration before sinking your head into your hands. Suddenly warm hands came to rest on your shoulders, strong thumbs massaging the tight muscles in your neck. Â
"You need to relax, Y/N." Leonard's voice was comforting, reassuring.Â
The contact made you unintentionally groan and you pulled away, suddenly self conscious. Â
"W-would you mind looking at the data for a minute, Dr. McCoy, maybe a second opinion would help." You stuttered, hopeful that your down-turned face as you looked at the baby hid your reddening cheeks.Â
"Of course."Â
The baby began to cough while Leonard was surveying the data, so you scooped her up to soothe her, humming softly down at the small infant. Â You felt Leonard's gaze on you for a moment before he turned back to the screen.Â
"Walk me through the symptoms again." He asked.
"Productive cough, lethargy, lack of appetite, and fever." You recited, having run them over in your head a million times.Â
"Chest x-ray?"
"Crackles due to widespread infiltrates, but no consolidation." You were rocking the child now, stroking her soft skin with your finger.Â
"Hmmm..." Leonard considered the data for another moment before turned to watch you curiously, his eyes flicking back and forth as he considered the information.Â
He asked you about the results of the cultures, and you responded that everything came back negative. Â You set the now-sleeping child back on the bed and turned back to the screen.Â
"What am I missing?" You sighed, staring at the data that you could probably have recited because you had stared for the last few days.Â
"Her sodiumâs low. Â And her weight's been dropping." Leonard noted absently and it was like a switched flicked inside your brain.Â
"Her weight." You quickly pulled up the data, enlarging it on the screen.Â
"HER WEIGHT!" You yelled, nearly jumping up with excitement, "THAT'S IT! Â I know what she has! Â Oh, Dr. McCoy, thank you!"Â
The doctor stood dumfounded behind you and you spun, swooping up to him and placing a firm kiss on his mouth before you could stop yourself. Â You pulled away quickly, rushing to grab the supplies you needed, hoping to ignore the fact that you had just kissed your boss.Â
"You gave me the last piece I needed." You were giddy, so ecstatic that you had finally figured it out.Â
"And which piece was that?" His voice sounded strained, but he quickly appeared beside you.Â
"Her weight loss." You stopped what you were doing and looked up at him, "Dr. McCoy, my patient has Tuberculosis."
His eye widened and he stepped back from you, his brow furrowed in disbelief, "How is that possible? That was eradicated years ago!"
"Try hundreds of years ago, thanks to the vaccine." You informed, finishing up your work in front of you.Â
You saw Dr. McCoy fold his arms over his chest out of the corner of your eye. When you turned to him, he still had the same look of disbelief on his face.Â
"Dr. McCoy, did you see the planet they came from when we rescued them? Â It was small, desolate." You smiled up at him, "There is no way of knowing they had access to the vaccine, let alone any decent medical care."
Leonard dropped his hands to his sides, understanding crossing over his features, "You're absolutely right. Â How could I have missed that?"
"I missed it too, doc, but I am the one whoâs only had 10 hours of sleep in the past 4 days because of it." You joked, but he only raised an eyebrow.
"Nevermind." You waved his disapproval off, âIsnât it highly contagious? Â Should we be concerned?â
âEvery single person on this ship has the vaccine, it was one of the requirement for the medical exam. Â And I know everyoneâs files, weâre safe.â He assured, and you gave him a sideways glance.Â
âWow, you know everyoneâs files? Â Thatâs impressive.â You nodded as you turned to face him, your arms crossed over your chest, âSo whatâs in my file?â
Leonard took a step towards you, not even missing a beat, âYou had your appendix removed when you were 9, you broke your wrist falling out of a tree when you were 11, you were hospitalized for a nasty bout of bronchitis 5 years ago - if you ask me, it was most likely bacterial pneumonia - you are allergic to kiwi, and you think Jim Kirk is really dreamy.â
You gawked at him, the smug look on his face sending a shot of desire through your veins which almost made you gasp, and you tried to hide it by turning back to your work, but you somehow only ended up stepping closer to him.Â
âWell the last point technically wasnât in your file; I overheard you talking to another nurse.â He crossed his arms over his chest in victory, looking down at you with smiling eyes. Â
You shook your head at him, a smirk tugging at your lips, âYou are good.â
âLetâs get back to our case, shall we?â Leonard suggested, but you could still see the corners of his mouth turning up and his cheeks were a little more red than normal.
You turned to your supplies you had gathered, "The reason the cultures all came back negative was because the myobacterium tuberculosis species only stains with an acid-fast stain test, which our sensors and devices don't do, because the disease was eradicated."
Leonard blinked at you before you continued,"I bet you that once I run this through an acid-fast stain test, it will come back positive for tuberculosis."Â
There was a moment of silence as you held out the sample you had just prepared in between you and him. Â Then a grin crept over his mouth.Â
"Go. Â Run the test." He urged and you fled the room, quickly finding the machine. Â
The test came back positive, of course it did, and you flew back to the baby and started her on treatment. Â
A sense of calm flooded over your senses, like a burden was lifted off your chest from the last three days. Â For some reason your mind drifted to Dr. McCoy, how his hazel eye had shone at you after you figured out the diagnosis. Â How his hands had felt on the back of your neck. Â How his cheeks had reddened after you kissed him. Â Pushing those thoughts aside, you stroked the chubby cheek of the infant, watching her little eyes take in everything, and you smiled, knowing for once you did something right.Â
"Is this seat taken?" A familiar voice sounded beside you, and the bar stool next to you was quickly filled with a broad form.Â
You looked over to see Leonard and your eyes widened, this was the first time you had seen him not in his uniform, and the dark t-shirt that was layered under an unbuttoned grey collared shirt made him look different. Â Handsomer, if that was even possible. Â
You stared at him, mouth open to speak, but you couldn't figure out what to say.Â
"Nice job today, kid." He didn't look at you while he said it, instead raised his hand to order a drink. Â
"Thanks, Dr. McCoy." You said, your voice small and your eyes focused on the drink in your hand.Â
"Please, call me Leonard."Â
You shot a sideways glance at him, still unsure of what to say.Â
"Since you kissed me today, I think it's only fair." He noted, and you could hear the smile in his voice.Â
Groaning at the memory, you stuffed your face into your hands in embarrassment, which elicited a chuckle from him.Â
"I'm sorry." You wheezed from between your fingers.Â
Suddenly warm hands were pulling at your wrists and you found yourself letting your hands float away from your face. Â You swiveled yourself on the bar stool to face Leonard, your wrists still circled by his sturdy fingers, and your knees bumping together lazily.Â
"Don't be, darlin'." He smiled down at you, "I understand the excitement of finally figuring out what's going on with a patient. Â We've all been there."
You froze in his grip, your mouth becoming suddenly dry at the sensitivity and kindness the doctor was showing you. Â You felt your cheeks redden as his fingers started to move in soft circles on your forearm, sending tingles through your body. Â You had never considered him in this way before today, but you quickly found yourself warming up to the grumpy doctor. Â
"I'm just glad the baby's going to be alright." You confessed, your words hoarse and strained.Â
Leonard only hummed in response, continuing his tantalizing circles on your skin, making your stomach flip at the sensation.
"Well I'd better get going." You huffed and pulled your wrists out of his grip, sliding your hand along his for a moment.Â
You met his eyes as you collected your bag, downed the rest of your drink, and slid off the bar stool. Â A hand at your elbow stopped you before you could get too far. Â
"Stay a while, darlin'. Â Let me buy you a drink." His voice was low and rumbling, sending a shiver of desire down your spine.Â
His hazel eyes were expectant and soft as you met them and you couldn't help but smile as you shook your head lightly.Â
"I need to check on the baby before I go back to catch a few hours of sleep. Â But maybe another time?" You suggested, hoping he wasn't aware of how fast your pulse was racing.Â
"You betcha, darlin'." Leonard smirked, running his fingers down the sensitive skin on the underside of your forearm before circling your wrist again.Â
"How about Friday? Â After the Alpha shift?" You suggested.Â
"Sounds like a plan." He gave your wrist a little squeeze, but didn't let go.Â
You flashed a glance at him before gesturing with your finger for him to come closer, and he leaned in.Â
"You know, youâre giving Kirk a run for his money in the dreamy department." You teased, a playful smile on your lips as his hand dropped from yours. Â
Leonard's hazel eyes studied you for a moment more before he shook his head, as if amused, "You're really somethin', you know that?"Â
"Goodnight, Leonard." You said, tilting your head and quickly pressing a kiss to his cheek.Â
Turning on your heel, you stalked out of the bar, heading quickly down towards the medbay, highly conscious of your flushed cheeks and shaking hands. Â
You couldnât wait for Friday night.Â
-Thanks for Reading! Â I hope you liked it!-
Once again this is for the lovely @outside-the-government for her Winter Blues Challenge! Â
I like this one in the sense that it doesnât show Bonesâ grumpy side so much as it shows his hesitant side. Â Maybe he is just figured out he is ready for love again and is nervous about it. Â That is kind of what it developed into, and I like the dynamic between Bones and the reader. Â Itâs soft and new, but could develop into something great. Â
