Alberta Carriers: What’s In Your Driver Files? When was the last time you took a couple of minutes, to confirm that you had driver files set up properly for your qualified drivers? Were you aware, there are specific documents that are required to be kept in a driver file before such driver can operate one of your commercial vehicles? According to Section 41 of Commercial Vehicle Certificate and Insurance Regulation (AR314/2002), records must be kept for each driver qualified to operate a carrier's NSC commercial vehicle. When I ask this question, a common response that I hear back almost immediately is “sure, we have filed for all of our employees, they have things in them like a SIN number, a copy of their application, their T4 information - things like that.” After hearing this response, I inform the carrier that those may be employee files, but are not driver files AND if they were to undergo an NSC audit, they would gain points against their audit score because they did not have the correct documents in their driver files. That is why we have created two free guides, to help carriers in Alberta easily set up driver files, that will meet the requirements communicated in Section 41.
