BEHIND THE STREAM
warnings: fluff, streaming mentions, slight awkwardness, lots of soft tension
the first time drew handed you a camera, you thought he was joking.
“c’mon,” he said, holding it out like it weighed a ton. “just stand here. you don’t even have to say anything. just don’t let lacy walk out of frame again.”
you’d laughed, nervous, and shook your head. “no way. i don’t wanna end up on camera.”
drew gave you that quiet, lopsided smile he always did when he was trying to make you comfortable. “you won’t. i’ll switch angles before that happens. promise.”
and, true to his word, you were never caught on stream. but you were there, always just out of sight — sitting on the couch with a notebook in your lap, whispering ideas to drew when lacy’s chat started spamming for something new.
—
over time, it turned into a rhythm. lacy pacing around the room, feeding off the chat. drew crouched behind the tripod, quiet, steady. you, half-hidden off to the side, throwing out suggestions when things got too chaotic.
“tell him to add a timer,” you’d murmur, leaning closer so drew could hear. “if he has a time limit, it’ll be funnier.”
drew would nod, tapping the mic button. “yo, lace — time limit. two minutes.”
lacy would groan, then go with it, and chat would blow up. drew always glanced back at you after, the corner of his mouth twitching like he wanted to say see? you were right.
—
later, when the camera was off and the stream was over, you and drew would end up sitting at the dining table with empty cans of redbull between you, sketching ideas on scraps of paper.
“okay,” you’d say, tapping your pen. “what if he does like… a blindfold challenge? chat gives him instructions and he has to do it without seeing.”
drew would grin, eyes lighting up in that quiet way. “that’s actually good. chaos, but… controlled chaos. lacy would hate it and love it.”
you’d laugh, and he’d duck his head, rubbing the back of his neck like he wasn’t used to making people laugh.
—
sometimes you caught him looking at you during those late-night brainstorms, when the house was quieter and you were both tired. his gaze wasn’t loud or obvious — it was soft, almost shy, like he didn’t want to get caught but couldn’t help himself.
“what?” you’d ask, teasing.
“nothing,” he’d say quickly, fiddling with the cap of his pen. “just… you’re good at this. with lacy, i mean. you make it easier.”
your chest would get warm at that, and you’d smile into your notebook, pretending you didn’t notice how red his ears got.
—
the best part, though, was when lacy was live and drew was manning the camera. he’d lean back just enough so you could whisper in his ear without being caught.
“pan left,” you’d mutter.
he’d follow instantly, trusting you.
and when you laughed under your breath at some dumb thing lacy said, drew would glance at you, lips twitching like he wanted to laugh too, but kept it contained. like your laugh was enough for him.
—
one night, after a long stream where lacy had gone on and on about “teamwork, baby, look at us”, you and drew were left to clean up the mess. empty chip bags, soda cans, tangled wires.
you bent to grab something off the floor, and drew blurted, “you ever think about doing your own thing?”
you blinked up at him. “what, streaming?”
he nodded, suddenly fascinated by the cord he was wrapping. “you’re good at it. well, not like… being on camera. i know you don’t like that. but ideas. directing. keeping things running.”
you smiled softly. “nah, i like helping lacy. i like… helping you.”
drew froze for a second, then gave you that quiet smile again, the one that made his eyes crinkle a little.
“yeah,” he said, voice low. “i like it too.”
—
later that night, when everyone else had gone to bed, you and drew sat shoulder-to-shoulder at the kitchen island, the only light coming from the glow of his laptop as you two typed out bullet points for lacy’s next stream.
your head brushed against his shoulder when you leaned in to read, and he didn’t move away.
if anything, you thought, he leaned a little closer.
