Spacemen 3 — Dreamweapon (Superior Viaduct)
Imagine it’s the summer of 1988 (sorry, but bear with me). You’re in West London, at the Watermans Art Centre, waiting in the lobby for a screening of Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire (see? It’s already better). In a corner of the room, four skinny boys, smelling strongly of hash, splay amid a pile of guitars and practice amps. From that corner a droning E note pulsates, filling the space. Another guitar, cleaner and more pellucid, gently ranges over the pulse, constructing simple melodies that repeat, modulate, and wander, never sustaining a structure, but never ceasing their exploration of ways to respond to that insistent E. A third guitar is only occasionally audible, but adds to the density. The drone would become part of the room’s furniture, but it’s too loud.
That’s the story of Dreamweapon, Spacemen 3’s August 19th, 1988, 44-minute performance, which was originally billed as “An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music”. As has often been noted, there was no sitar. Pete Kember, Jason Pierce, Will Carruthers (who had just joined the band), and Rugby friend Steve Evans provided the sounds — though Carruthers, who has been credited with “bass vibrations,” has subsequently confessed that he was too stoned to remember to turn on his amp.
Monthly reggae disco spinning dub, dancehall, roots, lovers rock, ska, rocksteady and all points in between. For our April session we're excited to try something a bit different and present not one but two live performances LO KINDRE is the dub project of Glasgow-based Daniel Magee, who has released one excellent 12" to date on the revered Optimo Music label, a cosmic blend of swirling synth and low-slung bass re-interpreting the influence of On-U Sound and the Cry Tuff Dub Encounter series. https://soundcloud.com/lokindre ALEXANDER TUCKER presents DUB DREAMWEAPONRY A Kent-born multi-instrumentalist who currently resides in E17, Tucker has collaborated extensively with musicians such as Fuxa, Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))) and Jussi Lehtisalo of Circle, not to mention releasing a series of critically acclaimed solo albums on labels including ATP Recordings and Thrill Jockey. He is also an accomplished creator of beautifully realised DIY comic books. Tonight he will be performing a special one-off dub-influenced drone set for General Echo under the banner of 'Dub Dreamweaponry' - prepare to be dematerialised... https://alexandertucker.bandcamp.com/ We'll be bringing in some extra sound for this night and given one musician is flying down from Glasgow the door damage will be slightly higher at £5. Live acts will be bookended by your usual residents spinning dub vinyl w/ space invader FX. 8pm til midnight. The Victoria is a lovely, inclusive pub with an affordable bar, pool table and dart board, a couple of minutes walk from Walthamstow Central Station.

“The domain of eroticism is the domain of violence, of violation.. a violation bordering on death, bordering on murder?... The whole business of eroticism is to strike to the inmost core of the living being, so that the heart stands still.”
