It's been so long since I last did a tag game, so it seems fitting to return with my most fave of them :D I got tagged for this twice, with flower, fresh, laundry, letter by @desperatlytryingtowriteabook and blue, trust, lie, shiver by @wilde-writing, I'm gonna combine the two tags into one post :) Thank you for the tags! If you want to do it again, please consider yourselves tagged back :D
The latter snippets are from my newest wip, which is a trans fae/eldritch rapunzel short story retelling (so it only had 3 of the words xD). It might expand into a novella, so maybe it'll get an intro at some point.
Everything else I couldn't find there is from the completed 5th draft of Dream's Shadow, before I start on the 6th draft :) Gonna try to be more active in writeblr in general again, so if you wanna tag me for stuff it's fairly likely i'll actually respond to it properly again djfkd
flowers (ben pov / Dream's Shadow)
He forces his thoughts away from the attic, the monster, and his parents, and then he walks down the stairs to the calendar next to its doorway. Papaâs elegant scribble mingle with Mamaâs symbolic scratches. Only Papa can really read them, but Benâs gotten quite good at interpretation over the years. The margins are filled with Avaâs sketches of flowers and cats and dragons, and seeing the little hearts dotted around his own name at the top sends a painful ache through Ben's chest.
fresh (fiyare pov | Dream's Shadow)
She concentrates, and then light bursts out of her and she can feel the shackles loosen, falling off.
She scrambles off the rack, hissing in pain. The wounds are far from healed; just enough to let her move, raw and fresh but no longer bleeding.
She finds the fresh, aching pit in her memories. Does her best to ignore it⌠but itâs like a new gap in her teethâshe canât stay away from prodding it.
âA childhood friend, lost in all but name and conceptâ
She tries to push it away, shudders. Despite the sacrifice, she isnât even a quarter back to her proper health.
letter (elinor pov | Dream's Shadow)
The walk to the hospital is quite short. After all, the schooling area is close to the Core as well. I suspect this is where Ava broke into Level Eight, but not even that lightens my mood. Instead, I unfold and refold the letter one more time (the creases are almost worn through now) and try to push away the idiot fears my mind keeps conjuring. It makes no sense. None whatsoever.
trust (ava pov | Dream's Shadow) (for context, Socks is a little dragon)
âApple?â Socks asks hopefully.
I sigh, shaking my head. âI donât have any apples todayâŚâ
Socks mimics the sigh and sits down beside me. Distant enough to take off quickly if they have to, but close enough to show their trust.
Itâs the bestest feeling in the whole world.
blue (At The Edge, The Tower)
Up close, the tower is built from large, chunky rocks. There are wide gaps in between them, but thereâs no door, no stairs, not even a measly ladder. The stones are black and slick, and when I touch them with a shaking hand, my fingertips go numb and blue-tinged. I draw them back in a hurry and stare upward and upward.
I know heâs up there. Thereâs no way I can scale this tower.
lie (At The Edge, The Tower)
A barbed branch slaps against my arm, biting through skin. I grunt and tear myself free; it leaves behind a smear of metallic blood. In the human world I bleed red, but the shimmer doesnât have to uphold the lie here. This is supposed to be home, but it is no home at all.
shiver (At The Edge, The Tower)
The First Language is something you feel rather than understand, and his song is about the creation of worlds, of oceans and skies and what lies beyond. I shiver, even as a part of me yearns. I stamp it out ruthlessly and carefully free myself from the shrub.
blue (At The Edge, The Tower)
Up close, the tower is built from large, chunky rocks. There are wide gaps in between them, but thereâs no door, no stairs, not even a measly ladder. The stones are black and slick, and when I touch them with a shaking hand, my fingertips go numb and blue-tinged. I draw them back in a hurry and stare upward and upward.
I know heâs up there. Thereâs no way I can scale this tower.

I got tagged by @ettawritesnstudiesâ, thank you <333
My words are reality, fluffy, scream, and melt.
Reality
Time slows down to a crawl. I can't tell if itâs still today or already tomorrow. I'm drifting somewhere between reality and nightmare, but every time I drift off, I see nightmare-Benâs broken face, or that white, leering thing⌠or, worse, I remember how he was nothing but an empty shell. As though he was sleeping, but someone had turned him into cold, dead stone.
Fluffy
âI just really want Ben to come back, you know?â I say after a moment of silence. Socks tilts their head, looks at me quizzically. Their eyes are big and black and smart, but not in a mean way. Comforting. Theyâre very pretty, too, like most featherdragons, with a very fluffy whitish belly, black face and throat, a reddish brown dotting them from the head to the tufted tail, which is striped black and white. And the black socks. I wonder if theyâre using my sock in their nest, or if itâs inferior to the stolen ones. They did stop stealing more though. Havenât heard Mama curse about it in a while.
âBen back,â Socks echoes, sounding sad. Even their small, fluffy ears droop. Then they take a few careful steps forward and puff up a bit, sitting on the ground next to me. Apparently Iâm not a threat today.
Scream
I tried again and again to be there for you, but you always pushed me away. And now that Iâm hurt, dying, goneânow you finally realize?
He wants to feel angry. He wants to feel hurt, to cry and scream, to rage at how unfair the world is, how blind everyone surrounding him wasâuntil now.
But now they know.
Now they know.
He just needs to find his way back.
Melt
His mind starts shutting down, turning numb from the onslaught of suppressed emotions forcing their way back inside. He remembers the whisper, the words. The Memories come next. Something inside him Knows that the Heavy Truths are at the bottom of the ocean behind his ice wall, and he hates it. Â
Now that heâs calmed downâhas started going numb, more like itâthe melt water stream has slowed down again, turning back into a slow trickle. Itâs still there, though. The longer it continues, the more I will remember⌠until I drown.
Something inside tells him that he should be panicking, but he only feels dazed.
I will drown because I wonât want to live anymore.
Iâm tagging @corishadowfang @kittensartswriting @fatal-blow @ettawritesnstudies (yes i am tagging you back <3) if you want to! :)
Also anyone else who wants to! :) Just say I tagged you lsdfkjsd i donât remember who does tag games xD
Please find the words bright, grin, gold, sombre, gentle if you can :D
I got tagged in so many of these and I love them so much but this one is the newest so Iâll start here and then maybe over the course of the next few days...?
Got tagged by @timefirewrites to find love, terrible, nature and stars :D thanks for the tag <3
These are all from Dreamâs Shadow Pt1
Love
I love watching featherdragons nibble sunflower seeds, theyâre always ridiculously careful about it even when the seed is tiny for them, too. Socks is maybe the size of a magpie but they still make sure to remove the shell before eating the actual seed. I doubt itâs very efficient, but itâs a lot of fun to watch. Itâs also great with all sorts of nuts, because sometimes the shells are so stubborn that Socks and Key have to work really hard to crack them, but they really like nuts, so watching them crow in excitement over their victory is awesome!
Terrible
âAva?â
âBen?â I donât even think about it, I run through the underbrush, duck between two trees, and thenâ
There he is.
Except heâs just lying there, on the ground, looking half-dead and terrible. His light curly hair is a long tangle of dirt and branches, and thereâs blood encrusted in it, too.
âBen?â I whisper, and I donât know what I dread more, him moving or him not moving.
His eyes snap open and theyâre burning like the sun.
Nature
âYou see that?â they ask, pointing forward with their free hand.
I do.
Less than a hundred feet away, the monsters are swarming the path. The drop on both sides is still deadly, but now it looks less supernatural in nature and more like an actual mountain ridge.
âAre you ready?â Azrae asks quietly. I donât even know how to respond to that.
Stars
âThen let us walk,â MikaĂŤn says, lazily twirling his fingers. The glowing light suddenly explodes into a thousand tiny ones, flitting away in all directions, becoming a thousand tiny stars on the firmament above them. The darkness seems huge, now, not as cramped and confining as before.
Itâs strangely beautiful to watch someone else build a dream.
Iâm tagging @ettawritesnstudies @albatris @ardawyn @pheita @lady-redshield-writes @kittensartswriting @fatal-blow to find the words soft, grin, leaf & silver if you want to <333
I didnât reeeeally get tagged for this, I got tagged for @ettawritesnstudiesâs wip taglist, but I like this tag game far too much not to indulge, so >:D Especially when one of the words is monster, you have no idea how many monster mentions I have in that WIP XD
âAre all human children as stubborn as you?â, they finally say.
I shrug. âI wouldnât knowâ, I say, âIâm not some many-eyed monster thing thatâs probably older than the entire world.â
Which somehow makes them chuckle. âFair point.â
(Ava POV)
Tea
Half an hour later, sheâs heated some water, prepared some tea, drank it allâbut the thoughts havenât stopped, the storm hasnât left.
Going back to bed isnât an option. Sheâs tired, but not in a way that will allow her to sleep.
Kiyera closes her eyes, breathes once, slowly, and makes up her mind. Itâs warm-ish outside (by her standards), even though itâs night, and as bright as during the day. It takes her eyes a while to adjust after the near-perfect darkness inside.
Tonight, she is going to go visit Tamohâs grave.
(Kiyera POV)
Fail
âDragonâ, I grin when Papa approaches, looking worried. His gaze softens and a small smile plays around his lips.
âWell, even you have to fail from time to timeâ, he just says, and then he settles down a comfortable distance away, closing his eyes.
And I remember Ben, and the dried blood at his temples, and stop laughing.
(Ava POV)
Bright
He tries to raise his face. Itâs hard, to muster the energy. It has to come from somewhere, after all, and he feels empty.
When he succeeds, he notices the sunshine for the first time. Itâs bright, and golden, and beautiful, warming him from the inside.
The ice fades away.
(Ben POV)
Pen
âWhere are you going?â, Papa asks, peering at me tiredly.
âIf I donât move Iâm going to fall asleep againâ, I say. My eyes feel leaden and I stretch. It doesnât help. âAnd if I try to sleep, I see things. And if I do sleep, I have dreams. And if I just sit there, I think too much. And then I have to cry.
I donât want to cry. So Iâm going to find some paper and a pen and write down her name and address.â
(Ava POV)
Iâll just tag my Dreams taglist, if you donât mind... hah, itâs nice to have an entire book for a tag game >:3

Rules:Â Open your current WIP. Starting at the end, find the first sentence you find containing the conjunction:Â and |Â or |Â but | still |Â although / though |Â yet
I got tagged by @fynniana, thanks for this nice new tag game :D
My current wip has, like, half a chapter but, oh well xD Not so many spoilers, I guess ;D So this is for As Dreams Collide.Â
And, But
I try to make no sound but then his footsteps come down until theyâre right beside me, and when he scoops me off the ground and carries me gently back upstairs Iâm sobbing again.
Or
Not intimidating or scary at all.
Still
I try to smile back but my face is still weird after all that crying and it probably looks pretty fake.
(Al)though
Now, though... now all I want is Ben getting healed.
Yet
Why havenât they healed his head wound yet?
Iâm tagging @madmoonink @wilde-writing @kittensartsbooks @theprissythumbelina @romenna @raiswanson and anyone else who wants to (Iâm too lazy to find more people v_v xD)
Tagging the Dreams and Shadows crew and a few others (if you want to, of course) @merigreenleafâ @sincerestaffectâ @romennaâ @fynnianaâ @neglectedtales @madmoonincâ @random-stuff-thrown-into-a-potâ @writin-maaagicâ @prismalichtâ @authordaiâ @lynnafredâ @hypnocutiegypsyâ @zekethegmâ @beautifulimposter25â @asttralhellâ @paper-shield-and-wooden-swordâ @jaimistoryteller
Ok, so this is a longer excerpt (~2K) and because of that itâs below the cut. So the few lines here are an excerpt of an excerpt! Because I realized I have never really uploaded a longer excerpt on here and this is only very vaguely spoilery and I like it. Itâs still a first draft, though, so Iâm sorry for language/... errors. Â
From Kiyeraâs POV, from somewhere near the middle of Dreams and Shadows.Â
The door opens a slit wide and a brown eye peers through, suspiciously, at about hip-height. I smile and bend down a bit to see her better.
âGood morningâ, I say seriously, âI saw your brother when I last came here and I need to talk to you. And your parents, of course.â
She stares at me impassively for a few moments, then something changes unexpectedly. âWhen?â, she asks, and thereâs a strange hope and neediness in her voice, something I donât really understand.
âYou mean, when did I see him? A few days ago, when I last visited, I thinkâ, I say, hoping that this answer is going to be all right.
Her face falls, and my heart breaks all over again.
Itâs still quite early in the morning for most people when I leave. It wasnât particularly hard to find out their address and I visited them before, after all, so I know where Iâm going. I take Dryhe with me because heâs been a bit sickly during the last three days and I want to keep an eye on him. Thankfully heâs a very well-behaved little beastie and only talks when he knows itâs all right. Maybe itâs a stupid idea â bringing him â but theyâve been cold the other times, too, so I donât think turning up with a young dragon will change things. And they do have a pet, probably a cat, because thereâs a cat flap in the entrance door.Â
Walking along the winding streets of Merreadon, Iâm once more struck by the simple beauty of the buildings and the dark, painful secrets they hide. Most people here seem to take it for granted that the bloody Asim exist and that they steal children and get away with it! When I lost Tamoh my whole world fell apart⌠but did anyone care? No, of course not. Most families have at least one or two close relatives who got taken. Itâs a common occurrence here! Sometimes I wish Iâd never left my ship. That Iâd just gotten killed during one of the fights, at the height of my young life, when everything was perfect and Dallas was still alive. But then I would never have had a child, and as painful as Tamohâs loss and subsequent death were, I feel blessed that I got to call him my son. So, would I really change anything if I could live it all over again? Would I make different choices?Â
I donât know.
There are a few other people on the streets. I donât hurry as I walk so I am witness to more and more of them, coming out of their houses, going to work, going to school. Some of them throw me a sidelong glance but most ignore the fact that thereâs an exotic-looking feather-dragon sitting on my shoulder, or that I walk differently.
Is their daughter going to school, now, too? Have I seen her on her way here, without noticing? The Sanctuary and school lie behind me by now, after all, so sheâd probably take this route. I saw her in the hospital so I should be able to spot her, right? Small, scrawny-looking thing with a halo of pale, curly hair and dark eyes⌠there was fire in those eyes, though. Anger, determination, stubbornness. I smile at the thought. She wouldâve been great friends with my sister. Seren had that same fire, that same thick skull full of ideas. Thinking of Seren makes my heart ache even if itâs been so long, now, so longâŚ
The Nichols live in a nice neighbourhood. Four one-family-homes, then a thin street, four more houses, rinse, repeat. What do they do, work-wise? How are they doing right now? Maybe the little girl will open the door. Maybe sheâll even let me say more than half a sentence before trying to slam it in my face. How is she doing, with her brother gone?Â
Sighing, I finally spot the right house. Steeling myself, I take a deep breath and walk the short path to their front door. Then I knock. Something meows behind me and I turn around, noticing the long-haired black cat for the first time. Amber eyes, almost glowing. No. I take a step to the side, looking at the creature with narrowed eyes.Â
âYouâre more than you appearâ, I say musingly, and the cat arches her back and slips through the cat flap in the front door. Eyes too intelligent for even a cat, too measuring, too calculating. Eyes hiding something. Cats donât hide things â I know, I take care of five, after all!Â
The door opens a slit wide and a brown eye peers through, suspiciously, at about hip-height. I smile and bend down a bit to see her better.Â
âGood morningâ, I say seriously, âI saw your brother when I last came here and I need to talk to you. And your parents, of course.âÂ
She stares at me impassively for a few moments, then something changes unexpectedly. âWhen?â, she asks, and thereâs a strange hope and neediness in her voice, something I donât really understand.Â
âYou mean, when did I see him? A few days ago, when I last visited, I thinkâ, I say, hoping that this answer is going to be all right.Â
Her face falls, and my heart breaks all over again.Â
âYou know about him, donât you?â, I ask her very quietly. She doesnât respond, doesnât even nod. Just her pale, masked face in the door, those dark, empty eyes.Â
âIâm sorryâ, I say. âAnd I donât even know your name! Iâm Kiyera, and thatâs Dryhe!â I pluck him from my shoulder and hold him out toward her, toward the slit of the door. When she doesnât move I sit down on the topmost stair, placing Dryhe beside me. After a small eternity, she finally plops down next to me with something I can only describe as awkward grace. I notice a dark smudge on her shoulder, like a small dark cloud, only visible from the corner of my eyes. Whatâs that about?Â
âAvaâ, she says quietly, eyes fixed on Dryhe. âDryhe What kind of name is that?â Fixedly ignoring what I told her. Trying not to show her pain.Â
âA special oneâ, I say, âIt means âGhostâ where I come from.âÂ
Dryhe stretches and climbs on her lap, only to curl in on himself and snuggle into her dress. She carefully strokes his head, his neck, his back. I smile, and then have to keep myself from crying.Â
âIâm not trying to hurt you, you knowâ, I say carefully, âI just ⌠I donât know. I feel like your brother is haunting me. As if, if I donât talk to you, Iâll never be free again. You should know the circumstances of how I met him.â I look at her, then, directly. Confrontational. âIf you want me gone, tell me and Iâll leave you alone. I understand. Of everyone you might have met, I guess Iâm used to heartbreak the most. You hurt, so you want others to hurt, too. Believe me, I know! I lost my sister, my son, his father, and so many others... you wouldnât believe it! I know what loss can do to a person.âÂ
I look at Ava and find myself smiling. The dark cloud has moved to her lap, too, and is now cuddling with Dryhe.Â
âHe wasâ, she says quietly, ominously. âBut I was too late. Itâs over. Heâs gone.â She starts singing very quietly to Dryhe and that dark shadow thing. I look at her for a few moments, trying to find out why my heart is aching at her sight, why I feel so guilty all of the sudden.
Finally, after what feels like an eternity, Ava looks back up at me. âHeâs gone. I was too lateâ, she repeats. Like sheâs afraid of talking about it but knows that she has to. To free herself of this burden.Â
âBen?â
She nods. âYou could see him when he was only a bit there.
Can you see Chael, too?â She motions down to her lap, to the dark cloud.
âI donât really see that much. Just something like a dark smudge? When I look at him from the corner of my eyes I feel like I can almost see him, though.âÂ
She nods again. âAre you like me, too? Escaped the Asim?â
I shiver, trying to read her gaze. Her eyes. Theyâre dark, though, not amber. She isnât like them. What is she talking about?
âLike you? I was never Tested because I didnât grow up in the Empire, you know. My parents⌠my whole people, they live very far to the south. It would take months just to get there.
I donât even know if theyâre still alive, if theyâve been conquered by now. I never saw them again after I left with Seren. We were, what, sixteen? Basically childrenâŚâ I break off, trying not to fall prey to the maelstrom of emotions and memories. Her eyes are curious and fascinated. I breathe deeply. Sigh.
âWhat do you mean, like you?â
She looks away, her face locking up again. âNothingâ, she says, but I can see that sheâs working something out, and that sheâs lying.Â
For a few moments we just sit there, staying quiet. I wonder if I should ask a few more prying question but then decide against it. She doesnât seem like someone whoâd appreciate that.Â
âHow do you make people like you?â, Ava asks after a very long pause. She doesnât look at me, just at the dragon and the shadow-thing. âEveryone loves my brother. The whole school seems to be personal friends with him, even the teachers! How?!â
I think about it for quite some time, and then I look at her seriously. âDo you think heâs lonely sometimes? What does he do if he has free time? Do you think heâs really friends with most of these people?âÂ
She frowns and I can see the gears turning in her mind. Finally, she shrugs. âHe loves learning about everything, especially places and inventions. He loves taking me out on adventures. He lovesâŚâ She chokes up and turns her face away, trying to hide her pain.
âCrying is goodâ, I say softly. âIt helps in letting go.â
âBut I donât want to let goâ, she cries, âI just want him back!â
âDo you want to talk about it?â
She shakes her head mutely.Â
âWould you feel better if I gave you a hug?âÂ
She shakes her head again and so we just sit there and wait for the pain to pass.
âYouâre lonelyâ, I say gently after a long while. She nods, finally, almost imperceptibly.Â
[...]
âThank you for being thereâ, Ava says very quietly, and I nod seriously.Â
âIf you need someone just to listen, Iâll be there for you. Iâm very good at that. Maybe we can talk to your parents, too. They should take better care of you, you know. Make sure that youâre not sitting outside your house, talking to strange old women without supervision.âÂ
Turning to me, Ava smiles through her tears, and itâs the most radiant thing.Â
âMaybe we shouldâ, she echoes me, quietly. âBut what if they donât want to listen? Iâve tried talking to them but they never doâŚâÂ
I look at her seriously. âDo you listen?â
For a few moments we donât move and she just looks at me, eyes wavering. When she finally glances back down at her lap, thereâs uncertainty in her eyes.Â
âCan you maybe help?â, she asks, âMama doesnât listen when I try to tell her things but ⌠sheâs trying. She just doesnât understand how to help properly. And Iâm even worse. Iâm not even tryingâŚâ
âOf course Iâll help. If they let me.â I hesitate. Honestly, I have absolutely no clue why Iâm doing this at all but somehow this little girl reminds me of the pain I was in just when Iâd lost Seren, and damn me, I wonât let her fall down as hard as I did. People are wrong. Sometimes it gets better when youâre suppressing your problems. Itâs just a matter of time, though, because while they might be wrong in some cases, theyâre most definitely right in others.Â
âI think itâll all work out. In the end.â
And she smiles again and I feel like Iâm melting a bit because she smiles just the way Tamoh used to smile.
Or maybe Iâm a sentimental old fool who doesnât remember properly at all and keeps being reminded by everything and anything. Thatâs a distinct possibility as well, of course.
