We have databases for everything, so why not dreams, right?
One company, DreamsCloud, is building exactly that and announced today that it has raised $2 million in a first round of institutional funding to continue developing its database, grow its teams, and increase its marketing efforts.
DreamsCloud is exactly what it sounds like: A collection of services and tools to help you chronicle, analyze, and talk about your dreams with others. On DreamsCloud’s website, people can research dream-related topics, record their dreams, post them in the community forum and discuss them with others, and even request deeper analysis from the site’s dream professional experts. The site also showcases maps of people’s dreams, as well as what dreams and topics are trending.
In July, the company also released its DreamSphere mobile app, which lets people do the same functions as the website, as well as access daily metrics about their dreaming, and improve dream recall through the app’s smart alarm.
“Over the past few years we’ve seen enormous public interest in recording and having conversations about understanding dreams – in fact, our dreams database now hosts more than 1.8 million dreams from around the world,” said DreamsCloud co-founder Jean-Marc Emden in a statement.
From what I can tell, DreamsCloud wants to build a rich community of dream enthusiasts and arm them with all kinds of resources that help them delve into the topic as well as connect with each other. While it would likely not interest some folks, and just be a novelty for others (the app might be fun to try out once or twice), there may be plenty of people out there for whom this would be a welcome addition to their daily routines.
DreamsCloud is of course not the first company to tackle this topic. Shadow also launched a similar mobile app last September, and also expressed the desire to eventually build a large dream database (maybe there are more dream enthusiasts out there than I think there are?).
Sphere Capital Holding led this round of funding. DreamsCloud was founded in 2010 and is based in Reston, Va.
