bill pauses, nervous, and takes a look from tori to the door of the classroom as if someone is going to arrive to save him from this awkward moment any time now. it’s not that awful a situation--- it’s not as if he’s dug himself into a hole with her--- but it is unfortunate to have been told that she’s going to be the lead in the play he wrote if that isn’t the case. the best case scenario now is that he’s told her ahead of time that she’s the lead and the worst case scenario is that he’s told her that and she really isn’t, getting her hopes up. he does, of course, have a say in who the lead is, but he’s not the director. he doesn’t have final say.
so he takes a moment to gather his thoughts, reminds himself to speak slowly so that he doesn’t stutter ( he’s so close to being over it, so close to never having to think about it again until it creeps up on him along with other memories that have long since faded ), and offers her a nervous smile. “i heard it from our director. i thought--- i mean, i thought she’d told you by now,” he says, and he hands her the script. “congratulations.”
