It certainly wasn’t a life like in all the great tales of their people. Rinnah had overheard so many nice stories, while passing by the windows of others. Sometimes, she liked to sit beneath the sill, and stay until it was over, though most times she didn’t have the nerve to remain in that place for too long, worried about someone discovering her there. The fact of the matter was that orphans didn’t get fairytale endings, at least, none that she’d ever met. Didn’t seem all too possible, really, but no child can go without a sliver of hope that things will turn for the better.
There was chance for everyone to live a more enjoyable life, and it was not governed by money, or power. Though, that did not mean that money and power could not prevent a person from realizing their destiny. At a certain age, the young men and women of the town could go and attempt to bond with a dragon. Not everyone was fated to be a dragon rider, but those with the means could keep others from having a proper chance. Rich families could pay off the law, and deny more unfortunate people their right to enter the forest. This is why Rinnah had to come up with a dangerous plan.
One night, after having tried for hours to sleep, but not able to get a single wink, the girl decided to run away. Though she’d never been one to break the rules, Rinnah didn’t see a point in refusing to do so, now, especially with her poor odds concerning the plan. She took her pack, and ran down to the kitchen, grabbing food, before plucking a cloak from by the door on her way out. It was fastened about her shoulders, pack slung over one, as the girl ran towards the forest, and past the town’s edge. At the tree line, Rinnah came to a stop, taking a bit of time to think over her convictions. Looking to the east revealed soft light on the horizon, and she knew that it was now or never.
Without turning around to glance at the place she’d called home so long ago, her journey began. The hope for a fairytale ending to be in her future was stirring once more. Even if it didn’t go as well as she hoped, there was still a chance for fate better than what lay back in town.
