Uffington White Horse, Uffington Castle & Dragon Hill. 

It was blowing a hoolie and my ears were frozen, with that put to one side this site is formidable and the views from the top of the hills are magnificent. Uffington White Horse is a huge prehistoric chalk figure best appreciated from the road...when you’re actually up there it is surprisingly easy to lose the horse! Uffington Castle is next to the White Horse and consists of huge earthworks which measure 220X160m. The earth works are impressive and the ramparts are about 2.5m high. Which if you’re like me and aren’t very good at judging distances, doesn’t necessarily sound like much but I certainly wouldn’t want to fall down the side. Dragon Hill is another hill on the site at Uffington. Apparently this is where St. George slayed his dragon -RoxyB. 

I really enjoyed this one. Depending on which route you take really varies on the hardship of the climb. But me being me, decided just to march straight up the middle. But boy if that isn’t a sense of accomplishment, you can see for about thirty miles once you reach the earth ramparts of the castle. I find these earth works impressive with the site of location, and sheer ingenuity to quite literally turn a hill into a fortress. The horse is cool too. -TommyC. 

Side note: The hills are incredibly steep here, practical footwear is a must. If you’re asthmatic don’t forget to take your inhaler up with you! It’s also crazy windy up there, so I’d suggest wrapping up a little as the harsh winds freeze you. 

Cost: Free (£2 for 2 hours parking in the car park...this is free for English Heritage members).
