NBA Draft Review
All the picks are in and the 2014 NBA Draft is over and it is time to talk about who where the winners and losers in this years draft. This was a much better draft then last year so by default most teams are winners, and to be honest I didn't really see any losers in this draft just some questionable picks but with good players.
Winners:
Now of course the Cavs did a good job taking Wiggins and the Bucks did a good job taking Parker so I am not going to state the obvious there. The Utah Jazz made the right decision taking Dante Exum PG from Australia. Here is a kid that not many people in America knew about because he played over seas, trust me they will know who he is once the season starts. Some people say that he reminds them of a young Kobe Bryant, I know that is a very bold statement but no one gets that comparison unless they truly deserve it. Paring him with Trey Burke will make for a nice young backcourt and with Gordon Hayward being the player that he is it could open things up for Exum who can get to the basketball pretty much whenever he wants to. The only downfall on Exum is that people feel like he hasn't really gone up against good competition. I believe he will success in his rookie season.
The Lakers made a lot of their fans happy when they select Julius Randle PF from Kentucky with the 7th pick. This kid is a double-double machine who will make an immediate impact for the Lakers this upcoming season. Good defensive player who also blocks shots, the Lakers are also getting a player with a chip on his shoulder, Randle said that all the teams that passed on him will regret it. He has the potential to be the best player coming out of this draft and he easily could have been a top 5 pick. It
The Miami Heat was able to trade for Shabazz Napier, a move that could possibly keep Lebron in Miami because Lebron has publicly said that Napier was his favorite player in the draft. Napier is already an upgrade from Chalmers, that's why I feel that even if Lebron does decide to go some where else and play the Heat still have a player that can be very good. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Napier is going to fill that void if Lebron leaves, it will just take the sting out of it a little bit.
Surprises:
Like I stated before, I didn't really see any losers just some surprises and my first surprise was the Orlando Magic taking Aaron Gordon PF from Arizona. Gordon is a really good player and a freak of a athlete but I felt that 4 was a little high for him especially if the Magic wanted a PF they hand Randle sitting right there in front of them, that's why I was surpassed. I had Gordon going between 7 and 10. There was something that the Magic liked about him so they took the guy that they liked. Like I said, Gordon is a really good player, he was going to be a top 10 pick, I just didn't think he would be a top 5.
The Celtics taking Marcus Smart PG from Oklahoma State was a surprise to me only because to me I feel like this was the Celtics way of telling the other teams that Rondo is officially on the trading block. Marcus Smart is a really good PG who can shoot the ball and get to the basket at will. He doesn't go away from contact at all, if anything he creates it which means he gets to the free-throw line. The best thing about Smart is that he is a strong defender which is why a lot of teams had him on their board. The reason I say the Celtics will most likely trade Rondo is because I just don't see Smart being able to guard the 2's in the NBA even though he is a good defender, we are talking 2 guards who are between 6'5 and 6'7. Smart is only 6'3 but he maybe that pesky defender that can handle the height difference, only time will tell but I would be really surprised, especially with all the Rondo trade talk the last few years, if Rondo isn't traded.
My biggest surprise of the draft was the 76ers taking Joel Embid C from Kansas with the 3rd pick. Embid before his recent foot injury was seen as the possible number 1 pick, so he is a really good player. He is a center who has a jump shot, who can post up, who can block shops and also has a good post game. The reason I was surpassed by this pick is because the 76ers just took a center last year who was hurt and didn't play at all during the season in Nerlens Noel. I have know idea what the 76ers have up their sleeves when both of these guys are healthy, that's why this pick didn't really make sense to me, I feel they could have traded down and got a 2 guard like Gary Harris to pair with MCW, but they have a plan ahead and I know not just me but a lot of people will be watching to see what they do.
