“Your mother wishes you well off and married. The only wish of this fogged old man who sadly lacks the means for your security is for you to have the freedom and the room to recover from your ill decisions so that you would know how to make better ones at the next opportunity.”

Akane considered his words, a little touched at her father’s uncharacteristic broach into sentimentality. She righted their course with their usual tandem. “And how have we been faring in that regard?”

“Terribly so far. A true disappointment to have model women as my daughters. Although your mother might make a strong argument for your case. And Mika in all her spirited silliness will perhaps embroil herself in a scandal one of these days to outperform either you or Shion.”

She took no pains to hide her aghast expression. “You tempt fire, Father. Please don’t give her more cause to act out.”

“A girl deserves a space safe enough for her to exert her foolishness,” he said, waving off her concerns. “I remember when you were 13 and your dear cousin had received his acceptance to Eton and how you struggled to contain the envy in your face when you read his letter. And at that moment, I wish you had been in his place, ready to tell me how you aimed to reject the offer just so I could indulge the chance to tell you how blessedly stupid I thought you were being. Just the principle to even have that opportunity.”

“You know, we don’t need to pretend that I had been considering spurning a university acceptance in order for you to tell me how stupid I am.”

“Oh, I’m well aware. But it doesn’t matter what I think,” he said ironically. “I am only your father after all.”
